Today thirty years ago I defended my [PhD thesis](https://www.cs.ru.nl/~jhh/publications.html#thesis). A little more than a month before, my son was born. And five days after his birth my father died. Three life-changing events compressed in thirty nine days. That somehow triggered the journey that took me here, now, thirty years later. To this amazing state of being. I still cannot believe this all to be real.

European governments are getting WhatsApp and Signal out of their system: https://www.politico.eu/article/european-civil-servants-new-messaging-services/ Sounds great. Until you realise that if politicians and officials get to use their own end-2-end encrypted communication app, there is very little stopping them from backdooring Signal and Whatsapp. Remember that state security risks were the main reason why Dutch intelligence opposed client side scanning!
