that thing where you write something so close to the bone that you literally cannot read it straight through without crying like a stupid baby, yet it’s not clear that it’s even parseable by people *other* than you, but it’s not a diary entry it’s a 10,000-word essay you’ve been revising for years

rereading THE HOBBIT a couple of years ago i was overjoyed to find, not ‘foreshadowing,’ but a kind of ‘old testament,’ earlier entries in a mythic continuity. commercial media franchises are falsified on the basis of something like the Doctrine of Embarrassment: no carefully managed corporate IP would allow a non-foreshadowing early entry to be discovered
