So far, pretty nul: I just realized none of the instances I’m logged in can even see feddit.org. Would likely need to spin something extra just for this. But honestly f.o is not even that worth it.

In the US system at least it matters not if your claim is legitimate, the mere fact that you can file it poses a severe risk. Patent system needs fixing from the foundations up. Or even better, full abolition. In the meantime, what’s the better actually open codec to reencode to?

There’s no need to follow an unjust law, nor a law that makes you an unethical person. “Software not for distribution or use in California” (aka: “offer void in Nebraska”) is a perfectly valid compliance, btw.

It could be the citizens but done indirectly, for example via taxes. Even better, not all citizens: just tax the rich and put the money into a journalism pool, so the rich can’t choose to benefit any particular newspaper or editorial line.
