New on the blog. Codeberg's members voted to stop hosting mostly AI-generated projects. The freedom worth defending is not the freedom to be taken from, it is the freedom to refuse. https://tarakiyee.com/open-source-is-indefensible/ #OpenSource #OpenSourceGovernance #ReformvsTransformation

The takes of everyone not happy with the Codeberg decision are a joy to read, pure cinema.

Do yourself a favour and don't read the Mullvad thing, they're just trying to steer the conversation towards free speech. I don't necessarily like that they're free speech absolutists, but that's not the issue here. The issue is simply mullvad makes money, money goes to dumbshit founder who does dumbshit things. there's no separating the art from the artist here, if you buy from Mullvad, you're funding fascists.

Audre Lorde's "master's tools" speech was not about tech platforms. So why does tech discourse keep citing it as if it were? I write about what happens when a Black feminist theorist's words get borrowed, stripped of context, and made to do work they were never meant to do. https://tarakiyee.com/on-the-enshittification-of-audre-lorde-the-masters-tools-in-tech-discourse/ #enshittification #AudreLorde #techpolicy

I can’t overstate how excited I am that @sovtechfund is investing in the core technology powering OpenStreetMap. Throughout my years in open source, OSM and its incredible global community of volunteers have always been close to me. It was one of the first profound examples of the power of openness and its impact on digital sovereignty and personal autonomy.

Putting the fundamental issues with GenAI aside for a second, I think I see a lot of parallels between self-driving cars and AI-generated programming. People are mostly okay drivers and okay programmers. But a machine is always going to be faster and more precise in highly controlled enviroments. Except we don't live in highly controlled environments. The political risk I see is that we start heading towards a world that's a highly controlled environment, a world built for LL...
