A few days at Berkeley visiting family and the spouse's old uni. People's Park is now a giant building still under construction (surrounded by a fence borrowed from a maximum security prison). A winning strategy in the War on Cars is to have parking signs so confusing that car owners dare not risk actually parking.

N3E repositioning from LAX to Van Nuys...which almost always means buzzing my house. If the intertubes are to be believed this 737-8 MAX business jet is owned by billionaire Evan Spiegel, Snapchat founder. #adsb

Follow-up poll. It's 2026 in Los Angeles and there's two huge flies in the house. Who let them in:

John Bolton has thoughts about the US conducting a ground invasion in Iran. I'm sure you can guess what they are. Here's John Bolton's thoughts on why he personally skipped out on the US ground invasion of Vietnam: "I confess I had no desire to die in a Southeast Asian rice paddy. I considered the war in Vietnam already lost." #uspol #trump #iran

RE: https://archaeo.social/@mrundkvist/116341025923946587 After living in the US for 30 odd years if they're not using football fields and Olympic swimming pools as units I barely understand what's going on.

Never thought I'd see the day when the United States is a coin flip away from allying with Russia and North Korea in an illegal invasion of another country. Might be time for all ranks of all US services to re-familiarize themselves with the Uniform Code of Military Justice, the US Constitution, and the outcome of the Nuremberg trials. https://www.nytimes.com/2025/02/24/world/middleeast/us-un-russia-ukraine-war.html?unlocked_article_code=1.zk4.rhIw.DJwfVQeDMLMF&smid=url-share...

I used to commute Hwy 17 out of Santa Cruz county about 30 years ago. It was a major commute road back then, and still is now. Through to the 1940s there was a train line over roughly the same route, and in the 1990s there was talk of reopening the line for commuters. Back then various locals managed to shut down any chance of the rail being restored. And of course Hwy 17 is still the dangerous nightmare it was 30 years ago. And they are still fiddling with Hwy 17 trying to reduce (but never...

Will be heading into a measles hotspot (yes Utah, looking at you) in a month or so and asked an Australian expert what my vaccination situation is likely to be. She informed me that Australians born before 1966 are generally not vaccinated against measles. The assumption for people born before 1966 is that given how contagious measles is, it's almost impossible that they haven't already been infected during childhood and therefore have antibodies. (In my neck of the Australian...

50 years since this was filmed in Swanston St, and this version is a high quality restoration. It's a long way to the shop if you want a chiko roll. Umpteen trams, @railmaps could probably identify them. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g-qkY2yj4_A

New York Times giving it the old college try at both-sidesing Iran history. Of course they fail to explicitly mention the US government org that got the ball rolling to the 1979 revolution. Hint, it starts with a C and ends with an A. #uspol #ukpol #brokentimes #nytimes https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1953_Iranian_coup_d%27%C3%A9tat

It might just be me, but I've found local TV news coverage of the LA fires to be mostly terrible. It's low on information and high on disaster porn/drama, and a fair bit of it has been wildly misleading. They cannot shake their bog standard reporting templates for this critical event. - On-scene reporters asking people who are literally running around putting out spot fires at their house if they could stop for an interview. - Picking through the ashes of houses and putting burn...
