New instance, new #introducton Hi there, I’m Sam. I’m a parent to 5 wonderful kids. I love to learn new things and tinker on whatever catches my attention. I love code, music, sci fi, reading and a bunch of other things. Professionally I’m a developer who has been doing DevOps the last few years.

Amherst is really pretty in the winter. Still adjusting to the cold but it’s nice I can get out on the rail trail so easily. #WesternMass

Moving across the country last May was… a lot. But now that we’re settled in more here’s some thoughts on good albums I listened to in 2025. https://www.merrell.dev/2025-album-reviews/

E-ink displays are one of the few pieces of technology I still find magical. I've been wanting to make an E-Ink Calendar display for my family's calendar and managed to get something working over my New Year break: https://www.merrell.dev/using-the-pimoroni-inkyframe-as-a-google-calendar-display/

I’m not too annoyed at the 1Password price increase itself but I am annoyed by one thing in the announcement. I personally haven’t seen any updates to 1Password in the last few years improve my experience. Instead the apps have gotten less stable and slower. I used to enthusiastically pay for 1Password, I don’t feel enthusiastic about it anymore.

My new laptop from @starlabssystems Arrives today! I’m really excited to try it out. I’ll be giving @elementary a try as well. It’s the first time using Linux full time in over 15 years.

I've noticed that whenever I'm looking at some open source code now, I am mildly put off if the license isn't copyleft of some kind. That's not particularly useful I find it interesting that's my reaction.

We had to say goodbye to our 19 year old cat, Emerson today. My spouse and I knew it was coming and we were preparing for a home visit in the coming weeks but we were too late. I’m grateful he had so many years and that when I met my spouse I got to meet Emerson. He’s been a part of my life for almost 12 years. I’m going to miss him terribly.
