“Leisure is also 1) freedom to enter, even to generate new symbolic worlds of entertainment, sports, games, diversions of all kinds. It is, furthermore, 2) freedom to transcend social structural limitations, freedom to play - with ideas, with fantasies, with words ... with paint... and with social relationships-in friendship, sensitivity training, psychodramas, and in other ways" ... "AI contributions have the added pain of being demoralizing. Reviewing PRs is already tedious work, but it is rewarding because reviewers generally feel that their efforts are contributing to educating a new contributor (who may become a future maintainer/reviewer). If your feedback on PRs is ... not going towards mentoring a potential future maintainer, it becomes much harder to justify spending your free time on PR review." https://godotengine.org/article/contribution-policy-2026/...

Review of the "synthetic users" in UX research. https://measuringu.com/review-of-experiments-with-synthetic-users I think "synthetic users" is a terrible idea, but have a look at the research, which often leans towards that it is not good even aside of professional, ethical and political considerations. #AI #usability

»I've owned a copy of Ludwig Wittgenstein's Philosophical Investigations for years, but I read it the way Everett Hughes told me to read the sociological writings of Georg Simmel: not to get a full understanding of what the author might have meant, but rather as a way of generating ideas I could use in my own research and thinking.« (Howard Becker, »Tricks of the Trade«) #sociology #symbolicInteractionism #heuristic

“Symbols are often defined as things ‘standing for’ other things. But they do not represent these ‘other things’ unambiguously: indeed, as argued above, if they did so they would be superfluous and redundant. … they ‘express’ other things in ways which allow their common form to be retained and shared among the members of a group, whilst not imposing upon these people the constraints of uniform meaning.” Cohen, "The Symbolic Construction of Community"

I really like »Tracer Bullet Development«: It is a simple method, focussed on practices rather than attitudes. Sadly, I can't find any good summary on the web. It is totally worth getting "The Pragmatic Programmer" and "Ship it" to read up on it, but it would still help to just send peers a link. #programming

Trying to read the microGPT sourcecode. (https://karpathy.github.io/2026/02/12/microgpt/) I love the idea of the project, but imho its readability suffers from: - putting stuff on one line that would be better readable on multiple lines (probably to stay under 200 lines) - using 2 or 3 character variable names. i.e. wo being weightsOutput, x being any vector etc. (mathematical conventions? Copied from the original GPT2 code?) #microGPT #programming #style

RE: https://social.coop/@scottjenson/116352522288234148 This post sparked a lot of discussion and some of the more thoughtful responses pointed out that social media is often used get engagement without entering a dialog and that mastodon does not foster that. I wonder if there is any data analysis of this, e.g. calculating a gini score of follower counts of a bluesky sample vs. a mastodon.social sample? #fediverse #statistics #UX

Usability issue discussions in open source projects "…were mostly focused on visual design and user interaction mechanisms". A possible explaination: "efficiency issues […] and aesthetic issues […] tend to be system characteristics that can be readily discovered and addressed by developers once a version of the system is implemented, while other usability aspects may require deeper, upfront analysis and UI/UX design." https://dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/3637307...
