Not anti-AI as in "I'm concerned about the future of tech" (I'm not) Not anti-AI as in "I'm concerned about the rights of artists" (I've been pro-piracy this entire time) Not anti-AI as in "I'm worried about the environmental impacts" (I am, but this isn't my primary reason for being against AI) I am anti-AI as in "it's been years and no one has actually successfully deployed this tech in a way that makes a return on the investmen...

I just realized that I've been using adblock so consistently, for so long, that I have basically no idea what the average person's experience of the internet is like. Every now and then I use someone else's device that isn't so locked down. And I'm floored by how useless and annoying the internet is. IDK how people do this.

Anyone got a recommendation on a reasonably priced sleeping bag? For like car camping. Doesn’t need to be high performance or super light. It’s for a friend, I was just gonna buy another of the same one I have. But it’s about 2x as much as when I bought it a few years ago 😭

The older I get, the less and less appealing owning a home is. Or maybe I'm just getting better at bullying landlords into fixing stuff. Either way, it's getting harder for me to feel like owning a home is the "smart money move" here.

So they're trying to replace a bunch of the clerks who work at the port with AI https://actionnetwork.org/petitions/husky-ai

Oh wow the tech industry is finally realizing what I’ve been saying for years now. It simply doesn’t matter how capable AI is if deploying it costs more than paying a person to do the work, which it always will, because it’s literally destined to siphon money out of orgs. The juice ain’t worth the squeeze!

Just read some conversations on reddit about spotting AI writing. We are fully cooked. People say “writers using the rule of 3” is a sign of AI. Like when you provide 3 examples to set a pattern, and no more. This is just what people learn in school, though, because it’s effective writing. And em-dashes? Well several people have said that that’s a surefire sign of AI, because they don’t even know how to type them. Which is amazing because on most devices you just hit hyphen 2x — — —

Anyone who has any faith in the US police/court system to do anything positive is... far more optimistic than I have ever been.

Why do people give two weeks’ notice when they quit even though jobs usually don’t give two weeks notice of firing/layoffs

Very silly complaint: MacOS has autocorrect at the system level, which I turned off because I don't like it. But certain programs (right now, noticing it in Reminders) still have autocorrect within them. In these programs, it's impossible to turn autocorrect off. I guess Apple just assumes everyone leaves this on all the time but I don't, dammit.

Kinda embarrassing that so many people are still into AI I made my mind up on this shit years ago when I realized no one has made positive cashflow on this. Who cares how much it’s being deployed? The users aren’t making more money. The orgs that adopt it aren’t making more money. And the AI companies themselves aren’t making any money at all. No one has ever made a dime off of AI/LLMs, and no one has a plan that will lead them to profitability. This is all hype

“The truth is that homes deliver enormous non‑financial value — stability, community, belonging. Those are reasons to buy. But as financial assets … They are expensive to maintain, difficult to trade, impossible to diversify, and usually purchased with significant leverage. The investment component is real but volatile … It is the predictable outcome of society promoting an undiversified, illiquid, highly leveraged asset as if it were the ultimate life goal.” https://archive.ph/XqCEb

I'm not saying the Democrats WANT to lose the next Presidential election, but they are weirdly attached to Gavin Newsom, and that makes me think they definitely don't want to win.

“LLMs won’t just disappear?” You sure about that? https://killedbygoogle.com/ What makes AI any different than any of this shit? It’s actually losing far more money than most of these things did.

Lying is wrong. However. The only fringe benefit I can see from the proliferation of AI/LLM shit is now it’s very easy to tell who I can get away with lying to: all the people into AI/LLM may be intelligent, but they lack capacity for critical thinking.

Wow it finally happened to me! An elder in my community approached me asking for help about digital security and privacy! I feel like being on here kinda prepared me for the conversation. I thanked him for asking me about it, and talked about how there's a lot of ignorance and people preying on that ignorance. I asked him what, specifically, he was worried about, and we talked about effective ways to mitigate those risks. Honestly it was great

Ran into another friend who works for a piano moving company. His crew is half white guys and half latino guys. ICE was following them in their work truck. They pulled over, had the latino guys wait in the truck, and the white guys got out and made fun of the ICE agents until they drove off. I imagine those cowards decided they could find some easier targets than a bunch of cut guys who move pianos all day.
