stiripesurse.ro spoke with Dr. Vishal Gajjar, Associate Director of International SETI Programs at the SETI Institute in California, one of the world's leading organizations dedicated to the search for intelligence beyond Earth. The conversation explored what scientists are actually looking for, whether humanity should actively transmit messages into space, and how we might respond if a signal were ever received. #PPOD: NASA's Curiosity Mars rover captured these clouds just after sunset on March 19, 2021, the 3,063rd Martian day, or sol, of the rover's mission. The image is made up of 21 individual images stitched together and color corrected so that the scene appears as it would to the human eye. The clouds are drifting over "Mont Mercou," a cliff face that Curiosity has been studying. The rover captured the image using its Mast Camera (Mastcam). Credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech/MSSS #space...

They may be small, limbless, and blind, but earthworms play a critical role in soil ecology. These invertebrates are the backbone of modern ecology, and scientists are even listening to worms to monitor soil health. #PPOD: China’s Tianwen-2 spacecraft has arrived at Kamoʻoalewa, a tiny asteroid that travels alongside Earth as one of only a handful of known quasi-satellites. Some researchers suspect this unusual object may be a fragment blasted from the Moon long ago, and Tianwen-2 is now poised to help solve the mystery. Tianwen-2 will attempt to collect a sample from Kamoʻoalewa’s surface before spending months mapping and studying the asteroid from orbit. Credit: CNSA #space #science

#PPOD: Over the Southern Ocean surrounding Antarctica, winds can whip around the globe relatively unimpeded by land. Intrepid sailors termed these southern latitudes the Roaring Forties, Furious Fifties, and Screaming Sixties on account of the strong prevailing winds. When those winds encounter a barrier like an island, the disruption in airflow can be beautiful. One impediment, shown here, is remote Peter I Island. For the second year in a row, the SETI Institute joined in the Atlanta Science Festival’s Exploration Expo in Piedmont Park. The expo drew over 20,000 science lovers, many of whom visited our booth. This year’s booth theme, “What Would You Say to Aliens,” focused on the Arecibo Message, sent in 1974 from the Arecibo Telescope to the globular cluster M13. The message encoded information about life on Earth, visualized as a grid of binary data. Learn more: https://www.seti.org/news/atlanta-scien...
