I love #Startalk. I burst out laughing in my office today, when I misheard how Neil Degrasse Tyson pronounced this scientist's name. I thought her last name was counting n.....!!!! Tyson was a little unsure of the pronunciation and had to ask her about it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QL9IMLJktOI

I've been watching the Great American Recipe (the new season started recently). And again, I am struck by how well they do #diversity on that show and PBS, generally. I wrote about this last year... https://rodgraham.substack.com/p/what-the-great-american-recipe-teaches

GWU's Program on Extremism does yeoman's work on extremist elements in the US. I see their program as adding a necessary theoretical and explanatory layer to the data points in the media and to the work done by DHS and FBI (the departments #Project2025 wants to abolish). https://extremism.gwu.edu/

On the one hand, my scholarship is meant for public consumption. Having it a part of Microsoft's AI service means more people may have access to some obscure thing I wrote. On the other hand, this kinda sucks. https://www.thebookseller.com/news/academic-authors-shocked-after-taylor--francis-sells-access-to-their-research-to-microsoft-ai

It's not surprising to me that sex workers are opposed to conservatives wanting to police their sexuality. It's that this particular, MAGA 2025 permutation of conservatism advocates policies that hurt SO MANY groups, yet the election is so close. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TPgdzVPH3Cg

Are you a (digital) sociologist or (cyber)criminologist studying AI? ODU is hiring! I'm on the search committee and the coordinator of our cybercriminology program. Our ad is vague, so I put some potential research areas in the image. https://jobs.odu.edu/postings/22086

Academics, who will more likely support progressive causes with theory and data-driven arguments, must be muzzled or lose their jobs. But churches - most of them supportive of MAGA candidates can give full-throated endorsements and keep their non-profit status. https://www.whro.org/2025-07-08/irs-says-churches-can-now-endorse-political-candidates

One thing sociology has taught me is that what seem to be unique characteristics of individuals or groups, are in reality responses to *unique conditions.* It makes total sense for some now to rest on ideological justifications that have been embraced by victims of hate speech in the past. #neighborhoodsociologist

"There are no MAGA, woke, Black, Southern, American, female, or trans “essences” that determine group outcomes. The patterns we see at the group level are not powered by some internal and eternal trait." #neighborhoodsociologist https://rodgraham.substack.com/p/groups-are-not-unique-conditions
