I’m tired of appeals to common sense. Don’t bother me unless your sense is epic or legendary.

It’s frustrating to listen to folks discuss “AI” and lumping together such disparate things as narrow, single-purpose models for tasks like industrial vision systems that identify flaws in manufacturing or protein folding with the more recent, popular, general purpose generative models in LLMs and image generators. It’s like lumping squirt guns and ICBMs in the same discussion about weapons.

If you must use LLMs (and you really mustn’t), the human should always be the driver of the task. ❌ “Summarize this document.” ✅ “Where in this document does it describe xyz?” ❌ “Write this code for me.” ✅ “Tell me why my code isn’t producing the result I expect.” At most, LLM output should guide human decisions and output, not produce the output. “I’ll check its output” is a fail-dangerous setup. “I’ll do it myself with hints from the LLM” is fail-safer.

Software companies publicly humble bragging about how their products are out of control, aren't fully understood, and cause security problems is a marketing trend that shares its genome with yesteryear's Wendy's Twitter

It’s been so long since we’ve had a functioning government that I sometimes forget what it’s supposed to do. If a commodity is as important to modern life as RAM and the RAM manufacturers are making deals that are preventing consumers from obtaining any of it then it’s time for the government to intervene. A supply of 0 for another entire year is unacceptable and dangerous.

A chronological feed of only what you subscribe to is good, but it’s isolating. You miss out on the larger conversation. An algorithmic feed is nice for discovery but is opaquely controlled by untrustworthy companies with perverse incentives, and they lead to clickbaity content to game the system. What we lack these days is human curation by people with taste we like.

These two fonts are everywhere. Block letters with a worn texture and a brush stroke one. Often accompanied with brush swipe backgrounds or dividers and dense, varied typography. I've definitely seen the style in AI-generated posters and thumbnails, but I'm wondering if it started out as some super popular template that everybody used and then AI started aping it. At any rate, every time I see it I'm inclined to mute the creator that used it. Best case, you need to pick...

My bank is upgrading their automatic bill pay system a few days before the end of the month right when rent checks need to be mailed to arrive by the 1st. Was there an IT conference talk that said maximum customer disruption is good actually and now that’s industry practice?

Hey. Ya like tools? Ya like weird tools? Alligator forceps. You need some alligator forceps. Why? Any time you've needed to grab something little in a place where your hand won't fit, alligator forceps have your back. One of the drawstrings on my pajama pants just vanished into its little waistband track. Oh no! But behold, alligator forceps! Stuck em down into that hole, grabbed the drawstring, and pulled it right back out. Alligator forceps! (paid for by the alligator forceps counci...

It's pretty wild how much guesswork is involved with brain drugs. It's always like "Here, this might help with your condition, maybe, like 25% of the time. We don't really know how or why. It's far more likely to cause these dozen side effects, so enjoy those. When that doesn't work we've got several others you can try that also probably won't work. But all of them will definitely mess with your dick."

Been feeling utterly brain dead the past few weeks. Took some extended time off to rest with only marginal benefit. Came back to work even worse. Brain just operating on 1mw of power. Was really concerned about what was happening to me. Had a notion to look up the side effects of a drug I’d been trying out. “Fatigue.” So I tried skipping a dose. Night and day difference. Fucking ‘ell, man. I hate that something so simple can convince me I’ll never think straight again.

Today's early access release of Subnautica 2 reminded me that I made maps of Subnautica 1. I wonder if I can repurpose my code for the new game. https://blog.rocketsoup.net/2024/07/16/subnautica-maps/ #Subnautica

My early impressions of #Subnautica2 are generally positive. A little rough around the edges, expected for a first early access release. E.g. exposition needs some polish to be clearer, VO doesn’t match captions, some minor confusing UI elements. But the core is there. And they didn’t make the protagonist speak. Thank god. It’s a small choice but wildly changes the feel and immersion of a game! “I’m in this world” versus “I’m controlling this other person in this world.”

I have a #Lego confession to make. When I’m building a set, I try to line up the “Lego” logos on the studs to go in consistent directions whenever possible. I don’t fret over doing it perfectly, but if you ran statistics on the orientations in a finished build they’d be way over chance. Makes it feel like I’m building it “correctly” and makes me slow down and enjoy the process a bit more. But mostly, I’m just weird.
