    Genuinely bizarre that Douthat would give up the cushiest job in journalism, where management clearly loves him, to join a newsroom whose defining attributes are its internal dysfunction and the constant stream of embarrassing leaks from disgruntled staffers.

    Was in New York again last week and it struck me that a minor but possibly underrated reason for NYC’s unusually strong literary culture (compared to other US cities) is that many people’s main mode of transportation is a passive one where they intermittently lose cell service.

    The thing about Norway’s sovereign wealth fund is that oil is a stable commodity and Norway has barely tapped the fund anyway.     I&#39;m pretty worried about declining literacy and all the attendant social/political/cultural/psychological degradation that comes along with that.
