I am a little bit surprised that I haven't seen any mention of the new euro banknote design proposals in my timeline. I would have thought that design + eu (+ birds!) would have the mastodons all hot and bothered. Maybe if they had a "trains" motif instead? Higher speed as the denominations go up?

With both the World Cup and Tour de France going on right now I was recently reminded of the single greatest sporting moment of all time: Get the potato in the hole without touching the red green, from s02e01 of Taskamster. I'll put spoiler cw's for the rest of the this thread so if you haven't seen it, do yourself a favour, and go watch it now: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_UgSDcHPgCc

This is one those things you make on the way to making something else. But I know what you people on here like. So, have a map! With circles and diamonds on it! You're welcome!

How do people keep track of the papers they have read? Tags in zotero? (And if so what do those look like for you?) A separate spreadsheet? Other? My problem is that while reading a paper I often know I am going to want to cite it for a specific point but when it comes time to write I don't remember which paper I was going to use for that point. #academia #academidon

I hate FIFA. I hate Google. And yet, here I am, setting up a World Cup prediction pool as a shared spreadsheet, because family traditions are *really* hard to break. (Any suggestions on how to code up all the tie-breaking rules? And third-place ranking? Yes, I know this isn't the best tool for this. It's not even something I want to be doing. That's the point. Family. Tradition. It just sucks you in.) #WorldCup #DeGoogle #fifa

I'm on the rails again today, heading up to the Netherlands to attend the European Passenger Federation’s conference in Maastricht on behalf of @erpu, as will @jon, @partim, & @patrick. There is a lot to look forward to at the conference. If you're there be sure to say hi! And, some exciting news about ERPU’s future will come out of it as well … so stay tuned for that. #CrossBorderRail

A polite reminder: your visualizations (charts, graphs, maps) should work in gray scale. A divergent color scale where the extremes are dark and the middle is light becomes meaningless if I can't tell the two sides apart.

RE: https://todon.eu/@redjives/116484129999998792 Eurostat got back to me! tl;dr: I was right. “The user raises a valid methodological point. […] This wording may give the impression of unique international passengers or unique cross-border journeys. However, international passenger counts may include both outgoing and incoming movements and therefore carry a risk of double counting at EU aggregate level.” I have updated the blog post with their full reply: https://j-dv.com/blog/post/counting...
