Caught this male balloon fly ( probably _Hilara sp._) today. These flies are known to produce silk, and males wrap prey items (or debris) into nuptial gifts ("balloons") for females. Here it is captured mid-flight on a rigid tether, front legs raised above its head. #Diptera #insects #macro

I think this is my first time catching a freeloader fly (Milichiidae) but I am not entirely sure. Maybe someone more experienced could help me with ID? Caught sweep-netting the grass. #fedihelp #identification #Diptera #flies https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/357591655

Fun fact: at least some Hybotid dance flies catch their prey with the middle legs! Look like mini mantis legs. Likely _Platypalpus sp._ #Diptera #flies #entomology #macro #photography
