The journal I edit has just published a short piece musing on communication in maths teaching by Douglas Hofstadter. Could we rely more on everyday intuitions when thinking about abstract ideas? Does the formalism seen when teaching match how mathematicians think about mathematics? Letters to the editor in response (in support or arguing against!) are welcome via gazette@amie.org.uk Free to access here: https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/epdf/10.1080/00255572.2026.2655320

Went to Green’s Windmill this evening for a members’ event. All wrapped up for major repairs to redo the cap and sails. Visitor numbers understandably down this year. Donations to help welcome: https://www.greensmill.org.uk/support-us/donate/

New podcast episode! To round off season 9 of our Mathematical Objects, @stecks and I enjoy chewing over the folklore that developed around the absent-minded professor caricature. https://aperiodical.com/2026/02/mathematical-objects-a-norbert-wiener-story/

I’m on my way to give a talk to Sheffield U3A’s Science & Technology Group, about board games through the ages with a bit of game theory thrown in.

My son (10)’s homework asked him for two common multiples of 3 and 4. He put 12 and 0. It marked him wrong. Unsure how to feel about that.

Merry Christmas! I’ve enjoyed the @mscroggs https://www.mscroggs.co.uk/ puzzle advent calendar - prizes to be won if you complete the puzzles this year. Something else I’ve enjoyed being part of is the Mathematically extra-complicated Secret Santa 2025 - see @tom7’s video here: https://youtu.be/4pG8_bWpmaE
