openstreetmap-website, the codebase that powers our website and API, turns 20 years old today! A big thank you to all the awesome people who built the code that powers #OpenStreetMap https://community.openstreetmap.org/t/20-years-of-openstreetmap-website/145877 ๐ โค๏ธ :openstreetmap:

We're simplifying privacy options for new GPS trace uploads, making it clearer what permission you are granting. This change will also enable future performance improvements to the GPS points API, which is currently slowed by supporting several different privacy models. https://community.openstreetmap.org/t/changes-coming-to-gps-trace-uploads/145728

We have switched to using https://pgBackRest.org for backups of our primary database ๐๏ธ, covering both #PostgreSQL base backups and WAL archives. This has allowed us to optimise the weekly planetfile-generation pipeline ๐, these weekly exports will now be published earlier in the week. A big thank you to the #pgBackRest team for a great product! ๐

No #OpenStreetMap planet file has been published for this week, next release will be back to normal schedule. Please use diffs if you cannot wait until then. We had a DB permission mistake which was caught too late to fix this week's planet.

Sorry to #QGIS users having trouble loading #OpenStreetMap tiles from tile.openstreetmap.org. We've had to heavily rate-limit QGIS after bulk tile usage risked disrupting service for other users. We're working with the QGIS team to distinguish bulk requests from normal interactive use. Could you donate a large server to help add tile capacity? https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Servers/Tile_Rendering

Thank you to all who have reached out to offer help and support! We have good technical mitigations in place to ensure our websites and API continue to be available for our awesome mappers. A large residential-proxy network has been identified, and we are reviewing options on how we can get them to stop. Our full "planet" export data remains available and as always free to download. ๐๐ง๐ง

We'd love to hear from the Delhivery.com team. Our tile.openstreetmap.org service is run by volunteers and funded by donations. We've had to block Delhivery's app from using our tile service due to the strain it placed on us. We tried reaching out, but were directed to their app not available in our team's region. Large users: please self-host or use a provider: https://switch2osm.org โ ๐ ๐ฎ๐ณ #india

https://OpenStreetMap.org has been disrupted today. We're working to keep the site online while facing extreme load from anonymous scrapers spread across 100,000+ IP addresses. Please be patient while we mitigate and protect the service. #OpenStreetMap #DDoS #Scrapers #AI

To keep #OpenStreetMap.org up and running while we're being deluged by scrapers, we've blocked 320,000+ primarily residential IPv4 addresses in the last 24 hours (+ 100,000 IPv6) involved in scraping. If you need OSM data, please don't scrape the website - use the official downloads at https://planet.openstreetmap.org ๐๐ #AI #Bots #Abuse

If you write about the messy reality behind "free" internet services: we're seeing #OpenStreetMap hammered by scrapers hiding behind residential proxy/embedded-SDK networks. We're a volunteer-run service and the costs are real. We'd love to talk to a journalist about what we're seeing + how we're responding. #AI #Bots #Abuse
