Open Letter: Stop the Uncritical Adoption of AI Technologies in Academia It's been a year & people tell me they've changed their mind, feel safer now to sign, etc. So I'm sharing it again for them. We're almost at 2k & anybody from anywhere can add their names. https://openletter.earth/open-letter-stop-the-uncritical-adoption-of-ai-technologies-in-academia-b65bba1e?limit=0

There are more openly anti AI women than men, so if you see manels (panels of all men) or events where there are very few or no women involved on the academic speaking side (not in the organisation/teaching), it's safe to conclude that there is something very strange afoot to say the least. https://olivia.science/cryptogyny 1/n

OK, it's honestly very distressing and worrying and I have ADHD, so I wrote it all down to get it out of my head https://olivia.science/entryism/ Enjoy, I guess... > Now that being against AI in an informed way is becoming mainstream, we need to be aware of entryism: the long-term strategy deployed by pro AI people or entities, like companies, to subvert such movements. 1/n

New preprint! Short piece with @andrea and @Iris that aims to address errors on our understanding of the role of scientific models. This is deeply related also to AI misuse seen everywhere not just psychology, as we explain: On Models, Prediction, and Scientific Roles Thereof: Commentary on Sanbonmatsu et al. reminder... > Anybody can ‘win’ a marathon if driven by car. Does that make it a weakness of the marathon race as an endurance event? Or does it reflect a deeper category error on our behalf, like with the misapplication of statistical tests, that an assumption has been violated? https://scholar.social/@olivia/115315373231397050

@samhforbes and I: > LLMs are labor intensive, are economically infeasible, and pollute the environment, and these properties may outweigh any proposed benefits. For example, poor quality air directly harms human cognition, and thus has compounding effects on educators' and pupils' ability to teach and learn. In activist spaces there's always this balance, maybe even a full blown dialectic, between trying to engage with those who disagree and protecting ourselves from them, especially those who actively want to harm us. These decisions are delicate and often personal as well as collective. 1/

    > John Stuart Mill said that his wife, Harriet Taylor Mill, “was the inspirer, and in part the author, of all that is best in my writings[. On Liberty] belongs as much to her as to me.” In his Autobiography, he says > With regard to the thoughts [expressed in the book], it is difficult to identify any particular part or element as being more hers than all the rest. The whole mode of thinking of which the book was the expression, was emphatically hers. https://dailynous.com/2026/...

I absolutely cannot speak for or about heavy users of AI but those that I know who were acquaintances were very prone to appreciate sophistry and flattery and very anti expert and have been so from before AI. This is a problem caused inter alia by underfunded education and mental health services. And this is true for academics as well as the general public, just to be clear. They love to only listen to their own knowledge basically regurgitated back https://scholar.social/@olivia/1151578287395...

This is the issue with theoretical work these days. Data isn't collected as means unto itself unless we've lost the point of experiment & observation. Without explicit theory to house data it's meaningless. Duhem-Quine, underdetermination of theory of by data is lost on people. https://olivia.science/theory 1/n

All my preprints on OSF are 404ing. If anybody needs that work, please reach out as I want to give them time to address it before we reupload everything. But please email me or coauthors if you need the PDFs. I always assumed DOIs were stable. How strange.

The UK has allowed AI slop nonsense to be made into laws... > Writing a law is not something for which there is a technological solution. It is not a perfectible process, it is a moral act that requires belief and responsibility. It is a process of debate. [...] Reading is thinking, and writing is thinking, and thinking is power. And when the inefficiencies of human thought, deliberation and opinion are cleared aside, we are left asking: who is in charge? https://www.newstatesman.com/te...

race realists are so insidious... how can he even be getting jobs and not laughed out of the room? > Cofnas is not conducting legitimate academic research into race and intelligence but instead spreading pseudoscience. https://www.brusselstimes.com/2020013/ughent-under-fire-for-hosting-self-proclaimed-race-realist-philosopher also race realism is just a hilarious euphemism for racism, of course 1/

CAIL = prerequisite knowledge for a critical perspective, such as to tell apart nonsense hype from true theoretical computer scientific claims. For example, the idea that human-like systems are a sensible or possible goal is the result of circular reasoning and anthropomorphism. https://olivia.science/ai

RE: https://scholar.social/@olivia/116357032470708831 Loads of chat and even discourse about so-called AI literacy, but I don't think most realise you need to teach things from quite a few angles and zoomed out. If people want to just know how the models work, that's not always possible without a much wider base anyway... Our offering below: 1/n
