Let’s Avoid W Social, Shall We? Bluesky created my profile somewhere in late 2023 or early 2024, if memory serves me well. Checking out all kinds of "social media", mostly to see how "social" they really are: that's something I have been doing since 2011, when I first encountered LinkedIn. But at that point in time I was already reading a lot of RSS feeds as well as a Mastodon timeline, and that meant that I only occasionally had a quick look at what...

Recent Reading Material (June 2026) Yes, I finally finished the third book of Cixin Liu - what a trip! "Death's End", by Cixin Liu (part three of the 'The Three-Body Problem' trilogy) "High Society", by Ben Elton I'm also 'consuming' Tim Danton's "The Computers That Made Britain"... in small 'bites' - because I read it section by section in a random order. https://nukle...

June Was Hot The last week of June was warm and sunny, yes. But we also had quite a bit of rain earlier, and in the end that results in a pretty average month in terms of solar electricity production: our panels produced 97% of what we expected on average. Nothing spectacular, contrary - for quite a lot of people in Belgium - to the outcome of the storm that passed over us a few days ago. https://nukleos.wordpress.com/2026/07/01/june-was-hot/

Good To Know If You Like Python Just a quick note to myself. If you are still using a Mac running Mac OS X "El Capitan" (10.11.6), then it is still possible to run Python 3. You just have to know which version to use: as far as I know, Python 3.9.13 is the latest version to run on this OS X. Download it from here. And don't forget to add the modules you need manually using 'pip'; things like 'requests' are not part of the default install...

They’re Made Out Of… Of course I know the short story "They're Made Out Of Meat" by Terry Bisson - I have read it, and I have seen the short movie that Stephen O'Regan made about it as a final film project (it's on Youtube). Great stuff, both the story ánd the movie! And now Max Leiter - someone who it seems is well acquainted with LLM's - took inspiration from Bisson and wrote " https://nukleos.wordpress.com/2026/07/04/theyre-made-out...

#Taxonweb heeft momenteel technische problemen... Net na het inloggen vroeg ik hulp bij het invullen van een veld, en al wat ik zag was de boodschap: "User not authentified!" (met een uitroepteken dan nog).

Now There’s A Good Question, Not Just For Philosophers I did not realize that the Israeli Attack Force used AI to determine Palestine membership of Hamas. Turns out they do, if I may believe the French website "Dans Les Algorithmes": D’un côté, l’armée israélienne s’est vantée d’effectuer la sélection des cibles à l’aide d’outils d’IA et d’analyse de données les plus sophistiqués pour identifier des cibles humaines et des infrastructures liées au Hamas ; pourtant, le… https:/...

One of my issues with AI is neatly described by Om Malik: ‘“AI” is doing exactly the same work that “tronics” and “.com” did before it. Suffix is a signal. It attracts capital. Nothing else matters. Day trading, momentum trading, gambling. It is just all the same.’ Read his whole rant here: https://om.co/2026/04/15/newbirds-ai-is-really-loonybirds-ai/

Come On, Apple, Be Quick Now! A week ago, I read this Mastodon toot (plus all replies and follow-up toots)... So I started writing my post for this blog: Yeah, it’s bad. Anyone who does not want to (or cannot) update from iOS 18 to 26 on a device that is theoretically capable of running the latest version is now stuck with what could be a very risky operating system. https://nukleos.wordpress.com/2026/04/01/come-on-apple-be-quick-now/
