I keep getting these spam emails informing me that my account will expire if I don't click on this dubious link. They don't seem to realise that they could easily bait me and probably pretty much all academics by promising the exact opposite.

- "Is there a meeting today?" - "Yes, you're welcome to join if you like!" - "Sure, I don't have much to report though." - "Okay, no need to waste your time listening to us, write your dissertation instead" I wish more meeting-related conversations went like this 😆

I don't usually post about this (or anything much, for that matter), but, as I learned yesterday, the phenomenon of reading through the draft of a whole PhD chapter and thinking 'Huh, I'm actually quite happy with this' does really exist, and, perhaps unsurprisingly, it's rather nice. #AcademicChatter #PhDLife

Would anyone in the #linguistics sphere or elsewhere have tips on learning Finnish? I'd be starting from basically nothing and would be working on my own for now. I can work with materials in English, German or Swedish. #learningfinnish #finnish

@Stoori Thank you, this is very helpful! I'll probably aim for both eventually, but for now, anything that helps get a sense of some basics is great, as i might be looking to spend quite a lot of time there in around six months.

My current Finnish level: "Vihreä velho on lehmä. Se etsii jotain syötävää." (The green wizard is a cow. It is looking for something to eat.) Fortunately, there'll be opportunities to improve: starting a postdoc with TurkuNLP in September, to work on digital linguistics & web language variation 🇫🇮
