Common people are genuinely surprised when I explain that LLMs, or what's called "AI" these days", is just brute force statistics. > OpenAI's large language models process text using tokens, which are common sequences of characters found in a set of text. ChatGPT and others wouldn't be nearly as popular if it wasn't for all the SEO spam that's around these days. A simple web search for the spring equinox's date yields tens of ad-ridden, text-filled pages where the answer is buried somewhere in the fifteenth paragraph. Trying to figure out why my very old iPad is responsible for 40% of my home download traffic, two-thirds of it from iCloud, and a third from apple.com, when the only thing I ever use it for is RSS reading. My iCloud sync includes less than 10 new photos a week, on average. The iPad's backup totals under 100MB. I saw someone reporting their Macs constantly re-downloading iCloud files, so thinking this might be the same issue? But why? And how to make it stop?

RE: https://mastodon.social/@bagder/116648467657760137 Agree. Asked a colleague this week to review my PR, and they posted comments that were clearly generated by AI. It's offending. If I wanted an AI review I would've used it directly.
