  There's a gruesome scene in the movie showing the slaughter of a bison and after doing a quick search I came to know the depiction of this killing was, in fact, real. Apparently Francis Ford Coppola's reasoning was that since the bison was going to be "sacrificed" anyway he might as well use the footage in the movie.
