@NickGjerde@mastodon.green when I was covering the events surrounding Trump’s arraignment I listened to a guy talk for an hour about how Dems have a multi-decade global plot to destroy America by installing a communist dictatorship, how everyone is racist, how the African slave trade wasn’t that bad, how he was at Jan 6th and knew the media lied. He was a retired cop. These people live in an alternate reality and I can’t shake the feeling that things will get worse before they get better.

@vruz@mastodon.social @jessdkant@kolektiva.social I know that many mainstream outlets are essentially committing malpractice by framing human rights issues as salvos in a culture war but it’d be good to remember that there are thousands of us, and many feel the same frustrations you do.

@vruz@mastodon.social @jessdkant@kolektiva.social it’s not accurate to say that the majority are just trying to get paid. I believe the error is that high profile folks are vastly overrepresented in your analysis. And I got into journalism right before Covid hit and I’m a freelancer. This isn’t some insider PR bc I don’t know what a newsroom looks like. I just know a lot of people who sacrifice a lot bc we believe the worlds need to see the truth.

@vruz@mastodon.social @jessdkant@kolektiva.social ironically it’s Fox News that spearheaded the “journalists are mainly self-interested people who can’t be trusted” narrative but it got the job done in this instance.

@vruz@mastodon.social @jessdkant@kolektiva.social I’ll admit our industry collectively coddled Trump, treated him as a novelty instead of a threat to our democracy, to all of our detriment. And I appreciate the compliment. We can agree to disagree on certain aspects of this discussion.
