  Mind boggles at the levels of enterprise nonsense that cause a company to send an email stating they are transferring a payment, and then take another 10 days to actually transfer the payment. Was some intermediary holding onto the money? The company themself? Or do US banks use horse-drawn coaches for transfers?

  The idea that ownership provides moral permission to do whatever you want with the owned thing, along with the idea that almost everything can be owned, lies at the heart of our political system. While this works pretty well for a pair of pants or maybe even a house, when people or companies are able to to own large amounts of land, other people's homes, infrastructure, and influence, i.e. the things that make up a society, ownership becomes a form of irresponsibly unchecked power.

  I guess what bothers me most about 2026-era macro economics is how shameless it all is. The wealthy are siphoning the world's entire economic surplus into a harebrained attempt to replace workers with data centers, and they've captured society so thoroughly that we're just letting them. If they succeed, what do you think the world will look like? If they don't, you can bet the consequences will not be carried by these clowns themselves.

  One thing I've learned in 25 years of software maintenance is that every time you commit crap that appears to work without being sure why it works, that's going to come back to waste a lot of your time later.

  At least for me, displaying comments on patches in GitHub has been broken for weeks (and I tried several browsers, clearing cookies, etc). I know software is hard... but not *that* hard. This looks like there's just no one around anymore who gives a damn.

  Skated Wannsee to Grunewald Kuhhorn to Pfaueninsel this morning. Ice thick and mostly smooth, though there are occasional messy cracks and refrozen broken ice. Unfortunately the Havel further north is still ice free. Wonderful tour regardless. Saw a brave fox cross the river.

  "Digital sovereignty," if taken to mean we should switch from unaccountable American companies to unaccountable European companies, is largely missing the point of the problem. In a globalized economy the two are going to be functionally indistinguishable. What we need is non-profit digital infrastructure that's not beholden to the perversions of financialization.

  The thing with bubbles is that people have gotten impressively good at keeping them going. Even if built on pure nonsense, when there's a capital surplus a bubble that provides avenues for profitable speculation (and/or grifting) can just keep on running on the power of that alone. (Bitcoin still exists, for Christ's sake.)

  Codeberg is under a heavy, long-running DDoS attack. The Forgejo docs warn that if you allow open sign-ups, you will be inundated in spam. The modern internet is a shark pool, and unfortunately part of self-hosting is learning to wrestle sharks.

  Calling code generated with a large language model 'clean room' is just silly. These are trained on everything, including the code you're claiming isn't in the room.
