Hello!

:person_info: I'm Lia / Lianna, the owner and sole user of this little Fedi instance.

:gaming: I have a lot of different and constantly shifting hobbies: music, vintage tech, conlanging, linux, art, webcrafting and the web revival, writing, reading, bicycling and much more. It always depends on my current fixations.

:noted: Professionally, I'm a linguist working as a freelance translator, mostly in the video game industry.

:accessibility: I'm autistic, queer and I have ADHD (medicated). My writing style sometimes might come across as cold or boring, but that's not how I mean it :( I'm quite silly actually

:dictionary: Bilingual account that posts in German and English.

The tech world is full of weird shit. Instead of adding features to the specification of your console/virtual terminal so it can support things like Unicode character rendering, fonts or true colour, we just ended up writing "terminal emulators" instead so you could have a graphical program on top of a display server pretend to be a terminal. The standard inbuilt Linux console still doesn't support anything beyond 8 colours and 512 characters in shitty lil keymaps. If I want a s...

I have to admit that for the longest time I was kinda ambiguous on the whole generative AI thing. Mostly because I majored in computational linguistics and I love the technology and maths side behind it, I maintain it's an incredibly fascinating invention. I did obviously realise the many ethical problems of using generative AI for all kinds of purposes that ended up in plagiarism, misinformation, harmful content generation and so on. I hated that large language models – being, you know, la...

Did anyone else notice that all the AI slop 'vibecoders' now use the phrase "I built"? Like, 90% of the time I see a sentence like "I built a plugin that lets you do XYZ" it turns out to be AI nonsense. I also can't remember any instances of seeing AI slop advertised with "I developed" or "I made". It's always 'building' now. #antiAI #programming

One aspect of #disability #accessibility that I feel is criminally overlooked is being mindful of #schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders. Please, please don't joke around with common psychotic triggers, at least without a clear content warning on it. It's not funny. Examples? Any absurdist shitposting that implies common psychotic narratives (stalking, shadow people, cryptids, paranoia, mind control, fake reality etc.), especially if deliberately directed at the reader! Even wo...

Hey, there. We all know that there are countless cosy and nice communities on #Discord of all kinds that many of us found a lot of friends and (used to) spend a majority of our time socialising in. I used to be able to instantly find nice and welcoming communities about basically any topic – #conlangs, #games, #art, #queer stuff – many of which resulted in amazing friendships and great times. But since I've practically moved off Discord for everything but work, it's been getting lonely...

I wish US Americans never became the predominant Western online culture. Just got banned from a community for saying "hell yeah", because it's "cursing in front of a minor" :skull: dude what Americans are so so deeply weird

After Bluesky, Threads, and so on, the whole #WSocial thing is another reminder that it was never about the #Fediverse being "too complicated" or "just for nerds". A bafflingly large amount of people genuinely only act on a gut feeling telling them that only commercial products with fancy marketing owned by a for-profit corporation can be trustworthy, 'official' and 'legal', for the lack of a better word. If something is a commercial offering by a competent-...

Warnung!

Bin gespannt! Übrigens eine kleine Blogempfehlung zum Thema: https://fussballlinguistik.de #Linguistik @linguistics #Fußballlinguistik #Fußball

I am at a serious loss for words and yet I need to write something. A #eulogy, maybe. Yesterday evening, here on Fedi, I read a #suicide note by @Crimekillz , my first girlfriend of eight years and one of my closest friends and soul mates for most of our lives. This morning, I learned from her family that she had indeed passed away yesterday night after purposefully overdosing on medication near her home. As if for her, it started snowing here for the first time this winter just now. I hardly...

Today I learned that Google's "page ranking system", aka the algorithm that determines the order of search results, is named after Google founder Larry Page. It has nothing to do with the fact it ranks webpages.

Oh, you want a self-hosted, #FOSS, federated, ethical replacement for Discord? Just switch to #Matrix! Okay. Did that. All my friends are now on my Matrix instance, eagerly awaiting me to set up feature parity with Discord so we can all switch over. Oh, you want voice and video chat? No problem! You'll just need to set up #LiveKit, an alt-right cryptofash AI bro software project, on your server. Just run their obfuscated installation script as root, it's that easy! ... Excuse me?! An...

We should all remember in these turbulent times that: Online forums about a thing don't represent the real audience or community of the thing. Always ask yourself: "Who is the kind of person who actively participates in an online community like this? Is the opinion of such a person relevant to my question?" You will realise very soon that there is an overwhelming amount of hidden biases in the composition of online communities alone, leading you to believe that some things are w...

Close to where I live here in Germany, there's a hiking trail called "Pfad für Genießer", which translates to "trail for connoisseurs". At regular intervals along the trail, you'll find these big wooden signs that showcase various native plants growing around the very spot you're standing in. And then – most importantly – a recipe you could cook using any of these ingredients! :) That's really cool, is it not? Every station unlocks a new meal made from regio...

It's a bit silly that the same people who are rightfully paranoid about corporations and governments holding databases of movement profiles, biometric data, sexual preferences etc. are the same people who voluntarily post Träwelling / #NowTravelling, "I just woke up" automated biometry, intimate details about their relationships and sex life, and tons of perfectly analysable selfies on Fedi. Like, you provide your entire profile yourself. The fascist government's databases are...

Just spotted a "Fuck Antifa" sticker on a streetlight. Wanted to put an antifa sticker over it, but there was a young family behind me on the pavement so I wanted to let them pass first. Just as they passed me and the pole, the dad stopped and pulled off the sticker himself. He taught his daughter how to safely remove nazi stickers. I laughed and told them that I was just waiting for them to pass to put my own on top. Small funny moment of solidarity. #Antifa #FuckNazis #FCKNZS #DeP...

#trans #transDE #germanTrans #transDeutsch #deutsch #deutschland #queer #queerDE #dieLinke
