the cyberpunk present is weird as fuck: the latest Shai Hulud malware wave contains an LLM prompt to create biological weapons and nuclear weapons, with the purpose to trip LLM safety refusals so that LLM-based code scanning wont see the malware https://socket.dev/blog/mini-shai-hulud-miasma-and-hades-worms-target-bioinformatics-and-mcp-developers-via-malicious

whats so annoying about the perpetual myth here on fedi is the idea 'oh selfhosting gotosocial is cheap and this is ridiculously expensive on bluesky', not only because its wrong, but because it misses the much more interesting question of considering it is possible run a selfhosted singleperson appview on atproto, why is barely anyone doing it?

Got a new Gouda pottery plate for my collection at koningsdag vrijmarkt. Already had the wall plate, and new one turns out to be from same painter, dating from 1920. Very happy with this find

@rra i think it will be good for the collective safety model in this space because while vibe coding brings it to the foreground that you cannot assume on remote software being safe, that assumption was never valid to begin with theres some pretty high profile fediverse software with some pretty serious safety issues, and thats all handcoded not vibecoded

@rra @liaizon @jackperkins the actual surface for harm in the short-medium term is pretty low anyway, for harm at meaningful scale to happen people need to sign up and start using vibecoded servers, and the problem that fedi has is that nobody is signing up for new projects anyway, vibe coded or not

the problem with writing about 'the purpose of a system is what it does' is that it makes you realise that the purpose of open protocols is to have protocol wars, people fucking love to argue about their protocol as a teamsport

@tchambers Hey Tim, can we get an official statement on what indieweb.social's policy is regarding federating with Threads moving forward? I am not comfortable that the server is federating with Meta, considering what has happened this week. I think we should not federate with a server that actively promotes harm this way. Federation decisions should also be made on the grounds of the ethics of the other entity that we're federating with, and not only on grounds of specific pos...
