Watched The Hole in the Wall (1929). Cool to see Colbert in an early talkie, but the plot feels like a mess. The two leads are strong despite the plot, and even though it’s not his best work, it’s nice to see Meek when he’s young. Some moments of moving cameras, but mostly a play. #MovieReview

Watched The Adventures of Milo & Otis. Cute film about animals exploring. Mostly feels like an excuse to show cute animal footage and build a story around it, but can’t help but love it given that I saw it dozens of times as a child. Holds up in that context. #MovieReview

Got me new #pebble watch and seeing the battery screen made me very happy.

Watched Devil Wears Prada 2. A film that knows exactly what it is and delivers in a predictable but delightful opulent display. If you enjoyed the first one and want a more mellow version that has Hathaway as a more experienced and talented actor, this is for you. #MovieReview

Watched Rye Lane. Cute RomCom with complicated and flawed characters. Really felt like a bad MPDG start but quickly got more fun to watch. Cinematography is jarring and off putting but reminded me of Sorry to Bother You. Enjoyable but not an easy background romcom. #MovieReview

Watched 5 Minutes to Live. Hokey ending and some pretty tough to watch acting, but the flick had my heart racing at a few spots, and Cash got genuinely dark. The music was odd, but for a heist/thriller combo, this is a fun deep cut option, as long as you can laugh at parts. #MovieReview

It is crazy to me that the watch I got has a month-long battery life! #pebble

Watched Drop Dead Gorgeous. More violent and arguably darker version of a Christopher Guest movie, mostly notable for all the different stars who came out of it for later things. Janney is the stand out, and while it’s not as polished a piece as A Mighty Wind, it’s fun and cringe. #MovieReview

Watched Thursday Murder Club. Solid beginning and middle, but it felt like it tried to wrap things too quickly at the end. I like Knives Out style movies and this book is immaculate, so I still had fun with it, but I don’t know how well it would land for unfamiliar audiences. #MovieReview

Got a new milk pitcher and it makes pouring so much easier. I’m far from good, but at least I can get the milk adjusted a bit. #espresso #LatteArt

Watches The Kid (1921). Haven’t seen much Chaplin but always shocked at how much pathos his films bring. Coogan is no slouch for a child actor, really hitting the comedy and intense emotions hard. Part of the fun is the world of 1921, but the emotions still hit today. Dream bit: weird. #MovieReview

I know I post a lot about old movies, and a lot of that love comes from Orphaned Entertainment, who do a podcast talking about public domain and abandoned media. Great way to find passion for things I wouldn’t see otherwise. https://www.orphanedentertainment.com/

I'm happy with the concept vision and where I ended up given a lot of life surprises this last week: https://swordswithfriends.org is up in case you wanna try it out with any folks. The concept started when I got annoyed that I was sitting playing mobile games in room with other friends doing the same thing, but we weren't together and no one wanted to get up to do a real game. This hits the social itch while still being low stakes and low energy. #7DRL #RogueLike #RogueLikeDev...

I have an app on the app store! It was largely a fun experience to see how to make it happen, but I use it often and others might feel like they lose touch with their friends or colleagues even though they care about them. If you read Bowling Alone and want to keep up with the people you care about, this might be the app for you. #development #apple #ios #release

Thanks @sarajw@front-end.social for the great article on getting color-scheme set up to support dark mode on https://katerberg.net. For anyone else that felt like dark mode was too annoying to figure out, check out the amazingly simple set up (and the PR just merged on my site if you want a dead-simple example commit) https://www.htmhell.dev/adventcalendar/2022/19/ #WebDev

Watched Phantom of the Opera (1925). Crazy to see how color was used effectively, and also how stage acting still revealed a ton of very real moments! Enjoyed it far more than expected and Philbin was shockingly adept in eye motions and small effects. #MovieReview

Managed to complete my second 5K in 20 years. Started #running for a Turkey Trot last year and have kept up casually. I must be middle aged since it actually feels kinda good when I’m done with it.

Watched Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Fun to watch with my kid. Pacing feels more frenetic than previous ones, but I still like the parallel to the first, even if it is a bit heavy handed. It’s not this one’s fault that the sequels are painful. Boyega shines in energy. #MovieReview

Watched Malice. What an interesting, twisty thriller. Full of names and phrases that Sorkin would use well later, but fun to see in this form. More of a “ride along” than a puzzle to solve, it has incredible moments like Baldwin’s God Complex speech. Layering of plots is great too. #MovieReview

Watched Animal Crackers (1930). Maybe my favorite Marx Brothers film; I will never not think of the bridge scene when playing any card game. Zeppo’s best film I think. Definitely wears a bit near the end, but has such highs that I forgive all. Hooray for Captain Spaulding! #MovieReview
