What does “local” mean to you? (Computational definitions accepted, but I’d push you to set formalism aside for a bit)

AI takes from, and relies on, content ecosystems, and ignoring that may create tipping points we cannot come back from. https://dataleverage.substack.com/p/tipping-points-for-content-ecosystems Led by @nickmvincent, I helped, and Johanna Desprez (our resident ecologist domain expert) made invaluable contributions!

Weird question to #academia: I have an incoming PhD student who was told (for visa reasons) that they need a “Research for Presentation” letter. Anyone have any experience with this? Our departmental graduate director, and international student services, are unfamiliar. I am mostly concerned about not producing problems for the visa process, but I’d love for this to be actually _helpful_ also. #faculty #phd #academics

One thing I’m mulling: (super weirdly) I have a first crop of PhD students approaching graduation, and I feel as though I benefitted a lot from trying to be visible on Twitter in the 2015-2018 era. I’m not sure where to direct students, today. I’m kinda relying on “be visible at the big conferences”, which doesn’t feel as holistic. I’m pondering if there’s something lost, perhaps, in HCI folks being on the edges of social tech and being willing to cut bait when capitalism shifts priorities.
