Finally saw Project Hail Mary, and wow, the buddy movie is fun, and wow, the sci-fi movie makes no goddamn sense.

Unsurprised to see a new, flashy, AI-focused app completely ignore the licenses of its dependencies. Oh, you want to ship iSH in your app? I want to, too, but it’s GPL’d!

@worktree hey folks, I’m having trouble pushing to my repositories and unable to find much information on what’s going on. The status page doesn’t show any acknowledgment of the outages and I didn’t see any posts on your socials either. Any updates? Thanks! #HugOps

I find I’m accidentally holding down my iPhone’s volume buttons _all the time_. Most of the time it’s something else in my pocket doing it (I keep my AirPods case in the same pocket as my phone). I’m kind of floored that there’s no accessibility setting to only change volume on each click of the volume button, and not auto-repeating when the button is held down. I filed a feedback for this (FB23913894) in case anyone at Apple sees this :)

@schwa @thejacenallen I won’t argue we’re restrained. But it’s reasonable to be furious that the world is rushing into this technology that accrues almost all its value to the wealthiest while giving them cover to lay the rest of us off. That makes it harder to believe anything we see and hear. That erodes public trust and our ability to relate to each other. That was trained on the world’s collective stolen data and is now being sold back to us at a premium. And it’s also useful sometimes.

RE: https://mastodon.design/@mariusz/116641054170560723 Wait, people believe that‽ I thought everyone knew that layoffs destroy morale and productivity.

RE: https://mastodon.social/@craiggrannell/116523279778302330 Same. Hannah Fry is great but I took issue with the same two things: 1. Even if AI is “getting better fast,” that’s more scary, not less. See the claims about Mythos, which are terrifying (if true). 2. Personifying the agent, which I think is dangerous because it lets users shirk their responsibility for its actions. (And it’s easier for us to get fooled if we start thinking about agents and tools as human with human-level judgement...

RE: https://mas.to/@mgeist/116539061111984745 I emailed my MP about this again. When the surveillance state to the south says our surveillance bill goes too far…. 😬

When I emailed my MP to express my displeasure with bill C-22, her office asked for my address and phone number. I replied asking why they wanted my information (especially with my opposition to C-22 being on grounds of privacy and security). She (or I suppose someone in her office) replied it’s “for the purposes of data entry”. 🤨

This is maybe the least-hot take of all time but I’m playing Baldur’s Gate 3 for the first time and it’s _immediately_ got its hooks into me. These characters are so amazing and the voice acting is out of this world! Loving it so far. 10 hours in. Off to see the goblins after having visited the druids.

I've just finished up version 0.4.0 of Nesbit, my NES emulator for Apple platforms, with some major performance improvements and a debugger that I'm feeling very proud of! You can try it for iPhone, iPad, or Mac at https://nesbit.app

TIL the planetarium at the Royal Ontario Museum was closed in 1995 “due to budget cuts” when it was TURNING A PROFIT at the time. Fucking Conservatives. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/McLaughlin_Planetarium

I need Swift / C interop help! I want to import a C library into my Swift project. Its type definitions _lie_ about their layout. Some structs have a field `some_c_type data[1];' but the array is actually dynamically sized at runtime. I've marked these structs as SWIFT_NONCOPYABLE and when compiling in Debug mode that's fine. The address of Swift variables of this type are consistent with the address of the C allocation. (1/3)

I made an extremely basic Snake game for NES! Hand-coded almost from scratch (I used a template for the basics) in 6205 assembly. Run it in your favourite emulator like Mesen or Delta. (Or Nesbit, my from-scratch NES emulator for Apple platforms 😉) Edit: v0.2.0 now randomizes the location of the apple after you’ve eaten the first one. https://worktree.ca/sadlerjw/nes-snake/releases/tag/v0.2.0 https://www.nesbit.app

RE: https://mastodon.social/@OpenMediaOrg/116280702938241722 I emailed the bill’s sponsor (Public Safety Minister Anandasangaree) and my MP to oppose C-22. You can find the minister’s contact information here: https://www.ourcommons.ca/Members/en/gary-anandasangaree(89449)#contact
