Goddess help me, but I've started blogging again First, easy, post thinking about #EMFCamp and my role in it. These will get harder… https://jonathanhogg.com/what-does-emf-art-installations-do/

Since the #EMFCamp announcement about dropping Mullvad sponsorship yesterday, we've had about £500 of new Art & Installations donations, which is super cool and we're really grateful. It will go towards supporting the amazing makers who bring their weird and wonderful things to the festival. If you have a spare few quid and love the sort of quirky stuff that appears at the festival then you can find the donations page here: https://www.emfcamp.org/tickets/sponsor

You wouldn't believe my THINK usage. I am now non-stop THINKing: from the moment I wake up to the moment I go to sleep. With just a single brain I can write emails, code, draw diagrams, hold conversations… even make tea! Best thing? All this THINKing is powered entirely with biscuits! All you people wasting millions of dollars on Claude tokens are going to be left behind. If you're not THINKmaxxing now, you're an idiot!

This is honestly the sort of web shit I live for – particularly that, of course, many of the horses are cats or crabs or… Also love that the website allows you to immediately order a mug with your drawing of a "horse" on it

It is the time of year where the bumblebees come out of hibernation in our chimney and the ladybirds come out of hibernation in the frames of the sash windows; we are now continually rescuing them from the house and helping them on their ways… #Spring

Just been doing kite-design workshops with two classes of 9/10 year olds locally – equal parts exhausting and brilliant, as ever. Some of the designs are incredibly sophisticated. #OutputArts

I’m sure the Astral tools are all very useful but, controversial opinion here, my preferred way to debug Python code is by reading and understanding it…

So my EMF talk from last year, “I gave up investment banking to become a digital artist,” is now available for your viewing pleasure! I have watched only a tiny part of it because I can't bear to see myself on screen, but some people said nice things about it at the time. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FaqnFGea2qc #EMF #EMF2022 #DigitalArt #Art

My experience with generative-AI has been that, at its very best, it is subtly wrong in ways that only an expert in the relevant subject would recognise. So I don't worry about us creating super-intelligent AI, I worry about us allowing that expertise to atrophy through laziness and greed. I refuse to use LLMs not because I'm scared of how clever they are, but because I do not wish to become stupider.

My new year's resolution is to continue ignoring all technologies that I am told ignoring will result in me being left behind. I embrace the being left behind. I will become a forest witch, speaking to myself in invented programming languages. In the dark I will twist little bits of wire together to make flickering lights that amuse squirrels. I will let the 8-bit soil from which I came reclaim my body.

You know what? HyperCard was a glorious moment in time that I dearly miss: an army of non-experts were bashing together and sharing weird and wonderful stacks that were part 'zine, part adventure game and part database. Instead of laughing at vibe-coders, maybe we should ask ourselves why the current state-of-the-art in beginner-friendly programming tools is a planet-boiling roulette wheel.

Do you know what's not accessible? Writing "a11y" in any article or documentation I will accept it as a convenience in APIs since developers are lazy and can't spell, but fuck off with using it in text
