One of the most thoughtful pieces on the politics of Springsteen's music that I've read. https://theconversation.com/born-in-the-usa-turns-40-and-still-remains-one-of-bruce-springsteens-most-misunderstood-songs-228348

ARIA is short for “amyloid-related imaging abnormalities,” with imaging referring to the MRI scans needed to find the brain bleeding and swelling. “Clearly, it is more than just an imaging abnormality,” said Dr. Matthew Schrag, who helped with an autopsy that concluded Lane died of brain swelling and bleeding that was likely caused by Leqembi. “My feeling is that ARIA is too euphemistic of a term. It conveys that this isn’t serious, and it certainly can be,” he said. https://www.latimes.com/s...

I love walking and cycling in Philly. But it has to be said - vast swaths of this city are a kill zone for anyone with the temerity to move through it in any manner other than a car. Disheartening that our new mayor is backing away from the plan to change that. #Philly #cycling #urbanism https://www.inquirer.com/news/philadelphia/traffic-injuries-deaths-city-spending-vision-zero-20240615.html

Philly summers are getting — and staying — hotter High temperatures are constant, overnight relief is lacking, and mugginess is on the rise, an Inquirer analysis shows. That can be especially hazardous for elderly people who live alone and the poor and vulnerable. Said Eric Klinenberg, sociologist at New York University and author of a seminal treatment of the 1995 deadly Chicago heat wave, “We have a tendency to treat them as expendable.” https://www.inquirer.com/science/climate/inq2/philad...

"New York Times tech workers, who create and maintain the technology that powers the New York Times website and games, are on strike, the New York Times Tech Guild announced Monday. The strike comes one day before the United States election day; the Times is famous for its live election night needle, something that is, of course, powered by the publication’s tech workers. The Times Tech Guild covers 600 workers across the publication." https://www.polygon.com/news/474209/new-y...

Instant block for anyone using #dementia or #geriatric to describe and boost memes about Trump. To be clear, the problem is not saying something nasty about Trump. Think for a second please about why most people are using those hashtags on here.

For the last two weeks, I have been literally working like a dog - hanging out and playing games all day with family & friends, taking walks, and napping. Lots of nappping. Today I have to start working like a human again ☹️

Good morning to all those who understand that the struggle now is to refuse to let the world be defined for us by a gang of corrupt, brutal thugs. A better world exists - embrace it and fight for it.
