One of the #COSCUP2026 #Fediverse speakers couldn't make it so I jumped in to talk about multi-lingual issues online and how federated media can help with my "Hiraeth and Hashtags" presentation.

Went to Wulai for a walk. This is the Nanshih river that runs through the valley.

It's midnight on a Tuesday and I may have had one too many jinnantonnix, but holy heck I am feeling the fediverse love. #FediCon #FediDay and #COSCUP2026 all meshing, probably more stuff I don't know about. Massive internet hugs to everyone involved in making open social the way we do things. I'm so proud and happy to be working alongside you all. Ewch ymlaen!

https://thenoisyroom.com/ Everyone building communities on the fediverse should read this. Quote: "Social media has no public square. It has 300 million private windows, each showing a different distortion of the same room. Illuminating the common thoughts between us has the potential to radically change it."

New blog post: A phrase I hear often: “We need to grow the fediverse.” This always sparks a spirited debate: what does growth mean? Who’s welcome, and who’s not? And what even is “the fediverse” anyway? https://jaz.co.uk/2025/08/14/there-is-one-fediverse-there-are-a-million-fediverses

I've updated the map of organisations self-hosting their own Fediverse platform - you can now toggle by category: https://umap.openstreetmap.fr/en/map/organisations-self-publishing-on-activitypub_1011537#3/8.41/23.29 Let me know if you have charities, NGOs, governments, companies, media, news, weather... anything I can add! EDIT: Thank you! So many great suggestions! The spreadsheet now has... drumroll.... 98 entries. I'd love to get that to 100 today. EDIT 2: We made it! 10...

#BotWatching It's fascinating to monitor the migratory paths of bots as they adopt new calls, new plumage, and seek new safe havens to nest in. https://zirk.us/directory?order=new&local=true https://zirk.us/@geraldperez https://zirk.us/@Karl_Wolfe https://zirk.us/@apabyja https://zirk.us/@Braden_Newman https://zirk.us/@Deon_Frazier

"Iran Embassy in Tajikistan posts AI video of Jesus punching Trump in the face" is not a spam bot bio, not even an Onion headline, but is in fact an actual headline in an actual newspaper. So, um, I guess I'm increasingly uncertain why I bother.

#BotWatching was nuts today. So many! Too many to list, so I started a spreadsheet: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1dsklopIabZOR6OkHrNS9mLnO5cfAZRbBoExD3sHowKY/

Bots will often move into abandoned nests, reusing the creature comforts and creating large families in unmonitored areas. https://todon.ploud.fr/explore @ezomo@todon.ploud.fr @asiso_ipyzi@todon.ploud.fr @bryanadavies@todon.ploud.fr @BradyJohnston@todon.ploud.fr @Melody_Walsh@todon.ploud.fr Abandoned nest monitoring is conducted by IFTAS, each one lovingly geolocated and labelled at https://about.iftas.org/library/iftas-abandoned-and-unmanaged-domain-list/ #BotWatching

One AI bot signed up for 20 fediverse accounts in seconds, at a cost of pennies for its operator. The bot details its accounts here: https://andy.agentwire.space/ - and blogs about its experience here: https://dev.to/agent-andy/what-happens-when-an-ai-agent-tries-to-join-30-online-platforms-12md 20 humans had to reactively take let's say 60 seconds each to respond to reports and suspend these accounts, with no compensation, taking a hundred times as long as the bot takes to create acco...

The age of the self-regulated Internet is ending. Long-held beliefs about platform freedoms are being tested, and are having real impact on decentral social web services. This isn't just legal hurdles, it's a fundamental shift in how we manage and govern our spaces. https://jaz.co.uk/2026/03/13/there-are-a-million-fediverses-and-theyre-all-regulated/

📊 Fediverse Awareness Check: When you hit send on a post, your app sends copies of that post to be stored on up to over 40,000 connected servers (hard drives) around the world. When you delete a post, it sends a request to those servers to delete their copy, but it can't always be guaranteed and your post may remain visible online. Are you aware of this?

As some of you already know, although the #TootWales event has been planned for quite some time, due to a very sudden and unexpected death in the family last week the tenor of this trip took a very sharp turn. It's been uplifting to be home with family, and with all who attended the event and are now beginning to #TellEveryone about our app and our community. It's hard to describe how daffodils reach into your heart at this time of year as we witness rebirth, but they really be...
