  As tired as I am of all those moody book cover photos with a silhouetted figure walking into the distance, I wanted to share the cover art for the new #JackReacher novel, tentatively called “Life’s a Beach.” Not really, it’s a random photo that came up on Flickr, by Sandrine CPK.

  I spent a lovely, blue-skied morning walking around #Shoreham yesterday morning, surveying for #OpenStreetMap. The main purpose of the survey was shops and businesses but there was plenty of fascinating history too. https://hisdeedsaredust.com/posts/2026/shoreham-survey/

  Another #Shoreham survey and a possibly burned bonce, as I made absolutely no concessions to the blazing sun that I walked around in for 3½ hours. Today’s #OpenStreetMap walkabout was concentrating on street furniture. I found the most Shoreham recycling bin ever, dedicated to fishing line. I also learned that UPRNs and street addresses can be assigned to German minesweepers.

  Just spotted this, right on my doorstep. Sunday 28 June for a trail half marathon (or 10k) taking in Mount Harry, Blackcap and Plumpton Ridge, with views down to Brighton and north over the Weald. Sounds fabulous and it actually runs most of my personal favourite half route backwards. #running #Brighton #SouthDowns

  I took the opportunity to test out one of the shop checklists by @rjw62 today. Despite the warnings, Firefox on Linux coped just fine with the vertical spacing in the layout, so I didn't need to do anything funky like converting to PDF first. It worked very well, folded to a manageable A5 size. I was confused by the lack of ‘flags’ compared with the screen version, but grateful for their omission when all I really need in the street is house numbers, business name and type. #OpenStreetMa...

  I spent 2½ hours in the sun around Madeira Drive and Kemp Town today, plaque bagging. Then I came home and made sure they are all marked and named on the map. I also mapped 6 of the 7 of the Kemp Town Estate history boards (one eluded me!) It is now really easy to plan your own historical walk around Kemp Town and enjoy the architecture, history and grab a good coffee at Temple or the Reading Room, both nicely restored as part of the Black Rock Rejuvenation Project. #OpenStreetMap #Brighton

  When the Kemp Town estate was built, around 1828, nine pillars of cast iron were erected. It seems that they were melted down during the Second World War, but they were faithfully reproduced from old photographs and reinstated in 1993. This is one of them, at the entrance to Lewes Crescent. I wondered why they didn’t seem to be on the map as I walked around but realised when I got home that they are marked in #OpenStreetMap as bollards which is, well, utter bollards. #FiveMinuteFix #Brighton
