Heroic The Hobbyist

I'm just a hobbyist game developer who is trying to find his place in cyberspace. Working with with C and SDL. My goal is simply to develop my computer science skills and apply them to game development. Always practicing and learning. Day job: Student Worker Night job: Computer Science Student

All my bad code is made by me. All my good thoughts are probably stolen from someone far smarter than I. I say no to Generative AI, I’m organically stupid.

Doing my #computerscience degree for the love of the game is rather discouraging. The amount of flagrant cheating and disregard for actually learning all in hopes to get a FAANG/MANGO/whatever acronym these days job is rather bleak. The minority of my peers actually care about computer wizard stuff, I feel like my classes are just full of “I want a job that pays well” types. I don’t fault them considering their economic future but there is a palpable lack the sort of hacker ethos I would expect.

My Summer course is over. I didn’t learn much because I don’t think 5-weeks is enough time to internalize the many different parts of a proper Data structure and algorithms course. So rather than wingding and complaining I just went ahead bought a physical #computerscience textbook and I’m going work through that from start to finish. It’s in #clang but I’m sure all the general use information will be applicable to any other language. If my school isn’t going to educate me I’ll do it myself.

My #datastructures and #algorithms textbook intro chapter just dropped a bar on me. This textbook came out in 1994 (which is a million years ago) and rings true to today. I think it’s always important to remember that EVERYTHING by and from the computer is a humankind choice. Things are this way because someone made the decision to make that way. None of this is “natural” and we made it and we can change it. Funny thing is I’m reading this all for the sake of learning game dev lol.

Writing lore is fun. I’m working on my big bad “dream project” and doing all the #creativewriting in my notebook and I think I have nailed down the central themes I want to explore with this game. It’s rather gratifying when games are in that pristine realm of “what if”, it’s such a fun place to be when don’t know anything about anything that would actually be a real hurdle to your game

I'm working in #sdl2 and using plain C #clang. This is going to be my summer project. I want to make a fully featured #pacman clone. I know some people are making websites and apps but I wanted to make something I cared about and I care about games. I read @romero 's autobiography and that has me pretty charged up to do things the old-school way. The way I see the arcade was where I feel in love with games as a kid so I'll start by making arcade classics. All human ma...
