Guilty academic #summer pleasures: Occasionally stopping halfway on my 17 km bike ride to work at my favourite café on the #LachineCanal. At 8 am sharp (when they open) I will have an espresso on the « terrasse » and answer student advising emails. Then arriving at work with a feeling of accomplishment. It does not get much better than that #academicchatter #velomtl

After a pleasant and productive train ride to #Toronto, #x2026 is about to start - the annual #Chemistry and #ChemicalEngineering conference (held together this year)

Things are off to a good start at #x2026 with interesting talks and conversations. Today, I will be giving my first of three talks (two on #teaching #science and one on #airquality data analysis from a #citizenscience project ) — First, I will report on a field course on introductory research practices for first-year students that I teach at #Concordia #ScienceCollege. https://www.xcdsystem.com/cic/program/1GHc9M3/index.cfm?pgid=3216&sid=31774&abid=122931

And a very interesting talk from members of the #TAME initiative on the calibration of #lowcost/mid-cost #sensor networks through colocation and “transfer calibration” methodology. Also, season-dependent issues with gas sensors. Very interesting #airquality #x2026 https://tame.physics.utoronto.ca

Lots of good ideas for teaching and research during the last two days at #x2026. #activeLearning, #peerInstruction and use of #ai in #teaching and #research on display with excellent critical, but respectful discussions. A lot of student involvement, too.

Finished my last talk in a Community Science symposium. I had the pleasure to open the session with a 40 min talk. Fantastic session with excellent discussions on how to start and conduct community science. If you do, you are in for the long haul with a lot of relationship building required, especially if you are tackling a long-standing problem. #communityScience #citizenScience #openScience https://www.xcdsystem.com/cic/program/1GHc9M3/index.cfm?pgid=3216&sid=31355&abid=123970

Now heading back to Montreal in a beautiful #ViaRail Budd car consist with a loco each at the front and back. Not sure, if it is push-pull or pull-push. Either way. We have enough power for a 1-min early departure 🤔 #traintoot

Undergraduate Research Day, which runs after each term (S/F/W) at #Concordia in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry is such an awesome showcase of #undergraduate #research. I am especially happy for those students who saw me as the advisor when they were struggling in their program (and sometimes in their lives) and proudly presented their work on a poster or defended their Honours thesis in front of a committee. Kudos for your perseverance to overcome challenges not always under your c...
