this guy is fat and happy, comes to munch on my greenery every day. when I saw it like this I thought at first that it wasn’t alive, but then it leaped up and scrambled up the hill to where it has a den. #groundhog

I’m NOT a bike mechanic but I can follow YT videos so I’m pretty proud of myself for removing the rear wheel of my Brompton and finding the puncture in the inner tube. I’ll have to find another video to get the chain back on….. #proudofmyself #bikefixit

I found this photo in the Erie Canal Museum in Syracuse. The description that goes with it is really important to think about, since it relates to today’s struggles between bikes and cars. Multiple kinds of transportation exist alongside each other and each is necessary. It’s almost never either/or. #cycletheErieCanal

The Smithsonian used to hold their Folk Life Festival on the Mall in DC around this time every summer. It was a wonderful event— it was always very crowded as well as very educational. One year the focus was on the Mekong River basin. A group of monks showed their pictorial alphabet. Another year it was Scotland, and a woman demonstrated the process of making fine, knitted lace. Does anyone else remember the folk life festivals? please share your memories. #folklifefestival

Another event that used to be held on the mall in DC was the solar decathlon, sponsored by the Department of energy (?) Teams from colleges and universities across the country would compete to achieve the highest score in solar efficiency. Each team was challenged to build and power a small house which had to be heated and cooled completely with solar power. They were very innovative! I believe they ended up moving the competition to California. Does anybody else remember the #solardecathlon

“The developer targeted Hispanic applicants ….persuaded them to take out high-interest loans that many could not afford…. the Trump administration and Colony Ridge are on the verge of resolving the case. But **the $68 million proposed settlement provides no money for victims of the alleged scheme.** Instead, it sets aside $20 million for policing and immigration enforcement — a provision that may be used to target the very people who were victimized by the developer” https://www.texastribune.or...

@wdlindsy@toad.social “he never follows through” one day becomes “I can’t believe he did that!!!” It seems to me like classic “the boy who cried wolf” mentality

I called Rep Mike Lawler’s office to express my horror at Dear Leader’s genocidal threats. Their voicemail sends you in an endless loop, you don’t get to leave a message. #TrumpMustGoNow

@heidilifeldman@mastodon.social This has been happening in my area. We haven’t seen any massive raids, but it’s been a steady drip, drip of one or two people at a time for months on end. Multiplied by at least a dozen towns within 20-30 miles.

a group of locals met this evening to paint umbrellas for Sat’s “No Kings” event It’s such a great idea to make portable, foldable, reusable “signs” that can be taken anywhere! #nokings #umbrellas

If you care about women’s reproductive rights, please read this! The stories are maddening as well as inspiring, and….they happen every day to women just like the ones you know. https://open.substack.com/pub/jessica/p/well-never-forget-the-abortion-conversations #abortionrights #reproductiverights #womenshealth @jessicavalenti

In response to the folks who say “why don’t Americans DO something!” I’ve been writing occasionally about our ICE watch group, and how hard it is to organize a random group of people to do something important. We have a group call once a week to compare experiences and pass on tips. These have become extremely difficult to sit through as one guy in particular seems to have decided to be the hero we’ve all been waiting for. He’s an expert on everything and loves to talk

I hear mumblings about a draft, so maybe today’s a good day to revisit this little gem: “The exact sentence of Project 2025's "Mandate for Leadership 2025: The Conservative Promise" document, reads: "Improve military recruiters' access to secondary schools and **require completion of the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery — the military entrance examination — by all students in schools that receive federal funding.**" #militaryservic...

UPDATE: “ICE purchases that never happened for $1000” (a popular category on Jeopardy, perhaps) Not only was there a screwup in NY, but also a similar one in TN. https://open.substack.com/pub/projectsaltbox/p/ice-issued-confident-announcements #ICEOutForGood #detentioncenters #incompetence

a break from doomscrolling #hudsonriver #breakup #frozenwater A recent high tide pushed huge blocks of the ice sheet onto the shoreline, making it possible to see how thick it had been, and how “rotten” the ice had become before it split apart.

The latest from our region regarding ICE ‘detention’ camps. No one wants to have one in our area, but it’s not easy to keep it from happening. Lots of details in here so please read it. https://rcbizjournal.com/2026/02/14/orange-county-executive-says-former-warehouse-in-chester-sold-to-ice-waiting-for-deed-to-be-filed-to-take-legal-action/ #ICEOutForGood #detentioncenters #chesterNY

@mekkaokereke@hachyderm.io THere’s not a lot that’s appealing about living in the US if you’re a young woman right now. If she marries her perfect match & gets pregnant, far too many states would press criminal charges if she miscarries, and/or let her die in the ER if she has complications. If she bears a child, she’s faced with crushing childcare payments, as well as high rent, expensive food—and student loan repayments. All while our “leaders” tell her she’s “not good enough”. #WhoN...
