Day 11: with sore legs, we descended to the bridge. We had booked mules to take us to the top — I don’t think I could have made the 1500 metre ascent after the previous 3 of hiking. Then, the long taxi-ride back to Cusco.

Day 12: we started at plaza Tupac Amaru, where I had a meaty, rooty stew for breakfast, then we took a bus out to Tipon with its square terraces and running irrigation system. In the evening; a final round of souvenir shopping at the Saturday craft markets.

@philsplace it goes inside to outside, from memory. I owned and loved that book when I was a kid.

On the winter solstice I fixed a pinhole camera to the shed, and I took it down on the summer solstice. The photographic paper recorded the path of the sun over six months.

@philsplace I love the idea of movie mode. We tend to watch double-half episodes anyway, to this would be great.

@philsplace thanks. It’s a really different kind of photography, with much slower feedback loops. I was incredibly pleased with the result.

Ah, it wasn't film, it was photographic paper. Larger size, and slower speed than film.

Day 13 was mountain biking; but I fell off and hurt my leg — only managed one of two planned routes. Day 14, I hobbled round Saqsaywaman with its monolithic stonework followed by a guided tour of Qorikancha where the Spanish built a church on top of the Incan temple of the sun. A quick lunch and off to the airport.

A short stop in New York on my way to DC. Walking around Manhattan is astounding. There’s a wonderful energy to the city; fabulous architecture, people everywhere and (if you follow the recommendation of a local) great pizza.

Day 1 in Washington DC: toured the Library of Congress and the Capitol, then walked down the Mall to see the Washington monument and the memorials for Lincoln, FDR and Jefferson. Lots of steps: feet sore.

Day 2 in DC: I spent the morning in the Postal Museum and the afternoon in the Air and Space museum, then I cycled to Georgetown for dinner and watched the sun set while cycling back down the Mall.

Day 3: Rode the Metro out to the Udvar-Hazy air and space museum. Then took a walk from the National Cathedral down embassy row.

We took a short trip to Istanbul. It’s my second time in the city, and the architecture and history still astonished me. We all had a great time.

January 2026: we spent a week in Tenerife, stayed in a tiny seaside town, saw the Milky Way, explored a couple of cities. Mostly lots and lots of walking up and down mountains.
