Retail theft went down and the national retailers federation had to admit 5% not 50% of theft was from criminal gangs. This whole panic was concocted to close underperforming and unionized stores and the media bought it. https://www.nytimes.com/2023/12/08/business/organized-shoplifting-retail-crime-theft-retraction.html?unlocked_article_code=1.Ek0.cMux.iabRLNkE-vqu&smid=nytcore-ios-share&referringSource=articleShare

We don't need to drink eight glasses of water a day. The original study was clear the water we needed largely comes from food! https://www.mcgill.ca/oss/article/health-nutrition/water-myth

@sommer @tewha Someone pointed out a couple years ago the Command-Shift-period feature in the Finder that reveals hidden files and I was like WHAT! WHAT!

As I think about DS9, it seems like the entire setup of the show is that the Prophets knew they would need a defender against the Pah-Wraiths, so they just used time and space to create one. (And, unlike most Chosen Ones, they had a plan that he would just become one of them instead of being discarded.) Doesn’t that make Jake 1/4 Prophet? Was that NEVER discussed? Does that explain the episode in which he changes 70 years of history?

@tewha @sommer I find it intermittently VERY handy.

@wassilywabbit In a Doctor Strange sort of “predicting all outcomes” setup, it seems like the Sisko was the only path they found and only if he picked up what they laid down? Like, there was clearly a possibility of failure even with their non-linear time consciousness?

@shoq It’s like Brexit in that it's a self-inflicted wound that will take potentially generations to recover from and leave us in an incredibly weak position globally. Only worse!

Will new tariffs doom my books to languish in a (very clean, well-lit, and well-run) warehouse in Vancouver, B.C.? You can help…if you would like a discount on my latest book, which was printed and is fulfilled from Canada! 🇨🇦 https://twit.social/@glennf/113778557990011317

@joesteel I think you live far enough away from the fire areas to be safe?

@joesteel Whew. What a madness this all is. I hope people are being kind. I'm seeing even left-wing “well, they live in California" stuff (limited). But none of us is magically in the right place (cf., North Carolina). We live near an active volcano, and there's no true plan for what happens if a regular event, overdue, were to occur.

Just deleted permanently deleted Facebook and Threads accounts. On the fence about Instagram at the moment since I don’t make Facebook money there.

@evoterra Views aren’t worth much at all. Most advertising is tracked objectives (purchases, clickthroughs, sign ups) as far as I understand the value.

@jochenwolters If I thought there were enough book buyers, I’d write a manual. It’s a very handy app. Transformed how I was building websites.
