Valē Glen Hansard. If you don’t know the name: he’s an institution of Irish music. He’s the guy trusted to play Fairytale of New York at Shane MacGowan’s funeral, and he won a Beat Original Song Oscar (with co-writer Markéta Irglová) in 2007 for Falling Slowly, from the movie Once (which he and Markéta starred in). https://youtu.be/k8mtXwtapX4?si=kwXPPRGMe-8kZw4L

Apropos of nothing: If you’re a podcast listener, and are on the lookout for something interesting, and don’t have Articles of Interest in your feed - get on that. If you had told me I would be hanging out for the next episode of a podcast about *Fashion*, I would have told you to stop huffing paint. And yet - it’s the most fascinating and insightful deep dive into why we wear what we wear. Multi part deep dives into GORPcore, Army uniforms, and army surplus. Another deep dive into the Japan...

Can anyone explain why I'm getting Dependabot security updates a branch of a repo that *isn't* the default branch for the repo? The branch *was* the default branch 6 months ago - but I've changed the default branch, *and* I've renamed the requirements file in the "old default" branch... and yet, I'm still getting security notifications for packages in that requirements file. (Repo in question is https://github.com/beeware/beeware.github.io; the `lektor` branch is...

RE: https://cloudisland.nz/@freakboy3742/116934753855041155 A follow up: it turns out my AWS cost alert for $57 billion dollars (predicted July bill $81 billion; last month: $3.31) was issued in error. So where do I submit the reimbursement for the anxiety meds and therapy that email required?

So... is anyone aware of AWS having issues with their billing right now? I've just had an ... alarming billing alert go off.

Thesis: The surge in popularity of TUIs is not because there's been a sudden interest in retro computing. They're popular because they're an easy way to get a cross platform UI in an app experience. Antithesis: There are other - and better - ways to achieve this goal. A good cross-platform GUI toolkit gives you the same thing, while retaining the ability to do things like, say, display an *image* or a *line chart*. A good cross-platform GUI toolkit can even output a TUI if you need...

I've been asked a few times to share what I know about running a successful sprint at a PyCon (or similar event), so I've written down what I know: https://cecinestpasun.com/entries/how-to-succeed-at-sprinting/

RE: https://mastodon.social/@hugovk/116731833341936501 This is big news - having 3 of 14 of the STA fellows being Python folk is a huge expression of support for the importance of the Python ecosystem. Congratulations to @hugovk@mastodon.social, @georgically@mastodon.social and @stanfromireland@mastodon.social !

@chessert@mastodon.online I’m pretty sure 24pt was the value I was told… but either way, a lot more than 12.

RE: https://oldbytes.space/@feoh/116687129039392818 Advice I was given in my youth: Print your slide on a full piece of paper. Put the paper on the ground. Stand on a chair. If you can’t easily read your slide, neither can the person at the back of the room. It flummoxes me that 30 years into using computers to show slides, tiny fonts in slide is *still* widespread practice.

Yesterday, @hynek commented on a Github issue, saying he would fly on a different day to me to ensure I got to Long Beach to deliver the @beeware challenge coin he just earned. Reader: The blessing worked! All my flights were early, and I didn’t even have to wait in a queue for US customs!

Brains trust: Where did the opinion end up landing on macOS Bartender replacements? When the product was sold under weird terms a year or two back, I put a pause on auto updates, and made a note to revisit the issue once the dust settled. I've just got a new laptop, so I need to work out which one I should use. Any thoughts on Ice? Vanilla? Something else?

Is there someone in my Mastodon orbit who knows Rust - and in particular, PyO3, Maturin and related Python ecosystem parts - who would be able to give me a primer on how the tools work internally, and maybe pair with me for a bit to help resolve some iOS/Android build issues?

RE: https://mastodon.social/@hugovk/116534312819614916 Something that isn’t a new feature... but it is new: 3.15.0b1 is the first Python release to have *official* iOS binary artefacts. You can now download a Python iOS XCframework from Python.org!

Thank you Google. I understand that you want Android developers to be active in their Play accounts. I understand that you sent me several email warnings about this. I was, however, quite busy. But yesterday, I was able to find time to log in to my account. There were warning banners telling me my account might be closed due to inactivity. And I was able to upload a new version of my app. ...and 10 hours later, you cancelled my developer account. Seriously?

Brains trust: for Reasons, my wife occasionally needs to wear a sports jersey as part of her work at a primary school ("wear your favourite team's jersey instead of school uniform if you donate to a fund raising effort" activities). Neither of us are really sports people, but we *are* readers, so she has historically worn the jersey of a ... notable fictional magical broomstick-based sports team. But she would like to avoid supporting that particular franchise. Any s...
