The "Oilsands Region" refers to not just the active surface mines, but a large region across 1/5 of Alberta that overlays #bitumen deposits. Most of it is in fact still native vegetation, but it is highly fragmented by seismic lines and other human footprint. After ten years, Alberta Biodiversity Monitoring Institute has finally been able to publish this report https://osr-report-2026.abmi.ca/osr-home?mc_cid=dc38273590&mc_eid=726c727c41 #oilsands #alberta #biodiversity

@AtanasE I heard we were going back to coverages. I better restore some from backup. Where did the tape drive go?

@Micha_Silver I'm not sure where to go with this.

@AtanasE You could delete them, but next thing you know you'll have a client calling asking if you can resend the quad index from 2007.

@AtanasE I enjoyed programming AML much more than anything that came afterwards.

As a Canadian #geospatial professional, it is the first time I have heard of #JMap or K2 Geospatial. Likely a "two solitudes" thing. But I am interested! Apparently there are 700+ organizational users - anyone out there? #K2Geospatial #CanadianGIS #geospatialDataSovereignty #gischat https://www.landing.k2geospatial.com/jmap-cloud-canada-EN

Geoffrey Hinton: “If we don’t have AI regulations, we’re going to be in terrible trouble.” https://gogeomatics.ca/canada-trusted-ai-verification-ethical-geoai/ This sentence is key :Human oversight must remain central, with validation and authorization processes required for high-impact decisions. The article doesn't mention the biggest elephant in the room: nothing AI does is worth burning down the planet for. #artificialintelligence #ai #canada

A little while ago, while looking for something else, I came upon an obscure #Firefox extension (also available in #Chrome) that shows you a beautiful #satellite image from #GoogleEarth every time you open a new tab. It brings me so much delight! Earth View from Google Earth https://addons.mozilla.org/en-CA/firefox/user/13156417/

This is a really beautiful video production, as well as being very interesting in its subject: Long term satellite records confirm the #borealForest has moved north by 23 km since 1985. It's a net gain of trees, which could be helpful for #carbon sequestration #biodiversity #climateChange https://nasa-ext.app.box.com/s/zp3qyzdgsi0xfqrcnctph5117f0s3sy1

So 99% of the maps we produce are conventionally oriented with north facing up. What do you think of people who insist every map has to have a north arrow? #cartography

https://www.cbc.ca/news/science/csa-lunar-rover-cancellation-9.7135987 #Canada #lunarRover I am going to write to the Minister of Industry asking this programme be restored. Maybe if there is a public outcry...and there should be! Canada was the 3rd country in space, has always been a leader in remote sensing technology and space robotics, this is our edge, let's not throw it away - again. This is our generation's Avro Arrow moment. Write to melanie.joly@ised-isde.gc.ca, cc Car...
