I finally own a record player again. I think the last time I owned one (as opposed to the last time I used one that belonged to my sister or my family) was when I had some plastic kids mono player when I was 4-5 years old in the very early 1980s. Got some LPs on the way too, and I live across the street from an excellent record store, *and* a mile down the street there’s another excellent record store… I’m going to have to draw the line at LaserDisc and capacitative videodisc though.

“The Hill” asks “Why are so many Americans starting to sympathize with villains?” What they don’t understand is that we’re finally starting to see Americans *not* sympathize with villains, when those villains are economically exploitative! Why are so many Americans supporting Luigi Mangione? Because the man he’s accused of killing was CEO of a company that murders 60,000 or more people **per year** in the name of increased profit. Claim denial that leads to death is murder. Period.

The retrocomputing community is being overrun by LLM slop just like everywhere else. Slopmongers hear about a system and immediately go to “Hurrrr, I’m going to vibe-code an emulator!” And then they start asking people who know what they’re doing inane questions that demonstrate they didn’t even do basic research, they’re letting the LLM do *everything* for them. If you’re doing this, go fuck yourself. I mean it, get out. Find another hobby. #retrocomputing #ai #llm #slop #butlerianjihad

@lydialurch My understanding of the way the HomeKit and Siri infrastructure is implemented at Apple is that there is not, in fact, a third party that knows whether my lights are on or off.

Doesn’t David Letterman own the core IP for The Late Show? If he could arrange the funding to do so—which shouldn’t be difficult—Colbert could just relocate and then continue recording and posting new episode if Letterman allowed it, couldn’t he?

We need to start building a list of Open Source infrastructure projects (and project forks) that categorically reject contributions from LLM slopmongers, so we know what’ll be safe to keep using and contributing to in the long term. That’s a good task for the Butlerian Jihad. #ai #llm #slop #OpenSource #ButlerianJihad

WHY THE FUCK does Siri on a HomePod have to go to the FUCKING INTERNET to turn off a FUCKING LIGHT in the SAME FUCKING HOUSE? That’s rank fucking incompetence and it’s been tolerated—nay, enabled—by a complacent press for way too fucking long. You could do this in the mid-late 1990s on a PowerMac without round-trips. #apple #siri #homekit

Since systemd-260 and later have been tainted by the slopmongers, and Linus won’t ban LLM-laundered contributions to the Linux kernel, I guess it’s time to resume hacking on the “initd” that I started putting together for NetBSD… #ai #llm #slop #opensource #systemd #systemd260 #linux

Does anyone have a pointer to the final OSF/1 Mach microkernel Open Source release? Right now searching for “osfmk” just gets me Apple xnu and MkLinux sources, and I’d like to find something without either Apple or Linux bits… Maybe Utah Lites has it? #opensource #retrocomputing #Mach

If Iran finally manages to force the world off of petroleum, how do you think historians 1000 years from now will regard the events?

LOL, “Hacker” “News” moderation is unhappy that I called a sociopathic piece of shit a sociopathic piece of shit and told them to remove themselves from society. Oh, dang, you’re such a good mod. https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=47345025

There seem to be two distinct kinds of “chatbot psychosis” happening right now: 1. Becoming delusional about themselves and the world as a result of being glazed nonstop by the friend in their computer, thinking they’re inventing new physics, discovering mystical secrets, etc. and becoming manic. 2. Becoming delusional about what LLMs are capable of and how effective they are, as a result of developing a reliance upon them, and becoming fanatical in their promotion and defense. #ai #llm #slop

I’ve published my Lisa filesystem access tool: https://github.com/eschaton/lisafs It lets you list and extract the files in a Lisa filesystem, with automatic text file conversion. It supports both the flat Lisa OS 2.0 and the hierarchical Lisa OS 3.0 filesystems. Right now it only works with Disk Copy 4.2 disk images but should be straightforward to extend to any other format that preserves page labels, e.g. raw 536-byte/sector ProFile dumps. Open Source, MIT license. #lisa #retrocomputing #...
