  I still wish Red Hat / IBM would not just have btrfs as a filesystem, but support it. They do this with fedora. ZFS would be nice, but because it taints the kernel, I can see why this isn't done.

  Now, the weird question. If one can get a hardware RAID controller with battery backed up RAM for cache, the cache only works if the controller is doing RAID. In JBOD mode, the controller is not used. I saw one article in Sun's (pre-Oracle) documentation that ZFS is supported on hardware RAID. However, you lose bit rot correction. This is mitigated, if the RAID controller patrol reads though.

  This is hackish, but I find this extremely useful for troubleshooting. I have this in root's crontab as a time marker. `0 */4 * * * /usr/bin/date > /dev/kmsg` This way, it doesn't just have timestamps in the logs, but also `dmesg`, where an absolute time is easier than seconds from when it booted up.

  By moving to mini PCs, and NAS chassis, I notice that I save around $100 a month month on power. Previously, I had several full towers. The biggest change was moving to a Mac Mini a few years back from a full tower PC. Mini PCs are essentially laptop motherboards anyway, and you definitely lose performance, but for what I do, it was worth the trade-off.
