More 502 preventing me doing #FreeBSD stuff due to #LLM scraper abuse. This pillaging of the commons means LLMs are *not* neutral tech! So burn it down with 🔥

Crisis #fediHelp I’m searching fruitlessly for a short comedy video from LionField who are a couple of Italians doing clips about #PastaCrimes. This specific one starts off with a woman taking minced beef and wrapping the pasta inside it and then drenching it in barbecue sauce. They react screaming in Italian and then play 3 grandmas appalled at it. Anybody got a link to this one? [EDIT] https://youtube.com/shorts/_w-cwXhm9TM

Once again, critical services used by the human #FreeBSD community are either down, or so degraded they are mostly unusable, by AI scrapers. We're not the only ones! Surely this sort of long-term deliberate *abuse* falls into DDoS attacks? e.g. under CFAA 18 USC 1030 viz https://iclg.com/practice-areas/cybersecurity-laws-and-regulations/usa and similar EU legislation?

OH: from yet another programmer I used to respect “I stopped reading the actual code about 6 months or so ago…” Like what are we actually here for?

#FreeBSD 15.1-RELEASE is out! https://www.freebsd.org/releases/15.1R/relnotes/ https://www.freebsd.org/releases/15.1R/announce/ There are too many people to thank individually here but big shout-outs go to: Colin Percival, Release Engineer Extraordinaire and Professional Cat Herder. You wrangle the zoo like you were born to it. The security team who rightly shoveled as many fixes from upstream projects and internal ones into this release so we don't have to patch it. Your efforts are sub...

#Microsoft #Github what even does "security" mean to you anymore? Something like this https://www.theregister.com/security/2026/06/08/github-nukes-70-microsoft-repos-amid-suspected-worm-attack/5252169 should have a front page announcement and an SVP or C-level person giving clear, regular, and prompt updates. Instead, https://github.blog/security/ is devoid of any news and you've dropped the ball *again*. Maybe this is a trivial issue, and no client exposure, but this is not the...

#floss #networking I need to replace a couple of old network switches. Are there any companies doing open source switch hardware and software? I would like to tinker. - 1U - 12 or more10G fiber ports - a couple of faster uplinks would be nice - decent RESTish API or ansible support Something like https://vyos.io #vyos seems suitable but it looks like I would have to diy my own hardware

Some very talented newcomers to FreeBSD are working on #GSoC projects - MPLS, Capsicum, network kboot, embedded systems incl NanoBSD and ESP32 development work, live kernel patching, netlink, & Bluetooth improvements! https://summerofcode.withgoogle.com/programs/2026/organizations/the-freebsd-project Another great community effort all round. #FreeBSD @FreeBSDFoundation

Has anybody heard *anything* from Microsoft/Github about how / if Github Actions stays secure in this environment with 3 local privilege escalation vulnerabilities in this week alone? I mean, how in the actual feck can you trust it? What sort of effluvium is slopping around in there? We seem to have no way of knowing how exposed we are.

After a bit of fiddling with KDEnlive to edit video, I have the markdown notes, slides & the video from my talk at #EuroBSDcon2025 up 25 Years Of Resilient Systems: https://people.freebsd.org/~dch/talks/euroBSDcon2025/ RT welcome ofc :-) And a big round of thanks to the @EuroBSDCon conference team, from organisation, to onsite & video helpers, to make one of the biggest BSD conferences in the world, happen every year. It wouldn't be the same without you!

Solar panels apparently produced 0 kWh in the last 6 weeks :-( I did a firmware upgrade on all the things and it’s not fixed it. A visit from somebody who can do the diagnostics is planned, and I’m bracing myself for the budgetary impact. I will have to whip up a monitoring script to track this in future.

The entire French govt is moving off MS, and this will be very very good for open source and European developers in general. https://linuxiac.com/france-launches-government-linux-desktop-plan-as-windows-exit-begins/ I expect all European countries will follow suit in the coming years. Microsoft must be terrified and livid with their administration. What will this cost them?

In a dark but interesting parallel these spheres of war begin to overlap. Ukraine desperately needs gas and oil to keep its people warm and to fight its war, and funding to support it. Zelenskyy has moved swiftly to both offer assistance to the Gulf states, and to secure “energy”. https://www.pravda.com.ua/eng/news/2026/03/30/8027899/
