Back on July 24th, the @internetsociety@techpolicy.social published a farewell message from Ted Hardie, who served as the Chair of our Board of Trustees for the last 6 years. Our board members are all volunteers - and it's a large amount of work - especially if you are in a leadership role as Ted was. It was great having Ted as our Chair and I encourage you to read his well-done message... https://www.internetsociety.org/blog/2026/07/carrying-the-light-of-the-internet-forward-a-farewell-me...

ACCESSIBILITY TIP: Adding emojis to your display name is terrible for people who use screen readers. I was just reminded by someone that when you do this (as I had done), then they have to listen to the screen reader read out all the emojis/icons BEFORE getting to your actual post. So my name came across as: ---- dan york satellite graphic satellite studio mic graphic studio mic curling stone graphic curling stone ---- Thank you to the person who reminded me of this! #accessibility

First time seeing a “NO META GLASSES” sign in the door of a shop! I’m not surprised… and I expect we might see more of these kind of things in the years ahead. #Meta #MetaGlasses #AR #privacy #surveillance #Vermont

An Architecture for IP in Deep Space - https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/draft-many-tiptop-ip-architecture/ ---- The IP protocol stacks used on Earth's Internet are typically configured based on assumptions of short delays and mostly uninterrupted communications. This document describes an architecture of the IP protocol stack tailored for its use in deep space. <snip> This architecture applies to the Moon, Mars, and general interplanetary networking. ---- #IETF #IETF12...

I truly love my job (seriously!) and love all the work I'm doing, but I have to admit that the 16yo boy buried decades deep inside me looks at this with a bit of envy: ------- The concept is simple. “We put fuel in a rocket, blow it up in a remote location, and measure how big the boom is,” said Jason Hopper, deputy manager for the methalox assessment project at NASA’s Stennis Space Center. ------- https://arstechnica.com/space/2026/03/nasa-is-blowing-stuff-up-to-study-the-explosive-po...

AVFTCN 040 – Returning From A Hiatus, and Plans for 2026 I'm back. After a self-imposed hiatus for most of 2025, I'm returning to something I've been deeply missing... writing and speaking. If you've been following me for any length of time, you know that not writing or speaking is, for me, a kind of pressure that builds and builds until I am ready to explode. 🤯 So what happened? The short version: my role at the… http://crowsnest.danyork.com/2026/03/24/avftcn-0...

Now watching my @internetsociety colleague Amreesh Phokeer presenting at the #GAIA Research Group on one of my favorite topics... ... the dependence of #InternetResilience on energy / power / electrical resilience. RE: https://mastodon.social/@Gargron/116237286336865985 10 years of #Mastodon! Amazing to think of how far it has come! Congrats to @Gargron , of course, but also to everyone who has participated in making Mastodon and the broader Fediverse the amazing place it is today! Yea for open source, for open standards, for decentralization, for user choice, for accessibility, and for enabling communities to form! Looking forward to the next 10 years!

@Gargron@mastodon.social That is an awesome shirt! Any chance you might get a US vendor who could print and ship here? It’s $18.99 for DHL shipping to the US which is significant!

RE: https://mastodon.social/@kiwix/116175641532766269 For #InternetResilience, I believe having offline access to #Internet content is critically important. If you haven’t been paying attention to what the good folks at Kiwix are doing, I encourage you to take a look! They began many years ago with making #Wikipedia available offline, and have expanded to make many more resources available- and have developed a great system for displaying offline content… and very crucially for *updating* the...

RE: https://mastodon.social/@sundogplanets/116152041766079159 This whole thread - and the accompanying article - are well worth the read if you are interested in #InternetAccess from #LEO, I.e. #Starlink, #OneWeb, #AmazonLeo, etc. The reality is that we do NOT yet understand all the potential impacts of these new services. They can bring life-changing #Internet to so many people with few (or no) other options.. but at what cost?
