  #PhotoOfTheDay is an old snapshot I took of a colorful California king snake I encountered while hiking in the Santa Cruz mountains near Mt. Umunhum. I've come across king snakes over the years while hiking, but the others have all been the brown-patterned variety. This was the only one I've encountered with the red coloring, and it really gets your attention on the trail! The king snake is not venomous. #photo #photography #hike #snake #NopeRope #nature

  #PhotoOfTheDay is of a very large Ouroboros that I forged. I'd made several small ones and then I decided to attempt this much larger version (over a foot in diameter I think) which I then gave colors through spot heat treating of the steel.   #PhotoOfTheDay is an aisle of the old Map Room at the USGS West Coast Headquarters in Menlo Park, California. This place was like a temple to topographic maps, with some very old handmade benchmark disks on display too. Sadly, it's been gone for a while now. We did an interview with the head of mapping there (I was helping to make a benchmarking video) and he explained that he had none of his people left that did actual field work. :( #photo #photography #maps #usgs #benchmark #explore

  #PhotoOfTheDay is a sort of before-and-after photo of my railroad spike knife alongside a typical old and rusted spike as the "before" image. Many used spikes are in worse condition and may be bent, gouged, more heavily corroded, etc. Starting with one of the better ones simplifies the process a little. #phto #photography #blacksmithing #maker
