"I downloaded the BC30 genome and selected two regions of its genome that didn’t match other species in the NCBI database" That almost throwaway line says a lot about what the Internet can be if we make better choices about where we spend our billions of dollars. https://taxa.substack.com/p/how-to-survive-boiling-water

Support your local library. Hug a librarian. https://techcrunch.com/2026/07/25/librarians-are-hosting-viral-avoiding-ai-workshops-for-people-who-are-fed-up-with-big-tech/

@glyph ask any programmer and they’ll tell you how most of the time when they find a good tool, they have to sneak it in the back and hope that when management finds out, the team has already made it essential to their work and have facts to prove its value. Tools imposed top down from senior execs are almost universally useless and reviled.

@marick As hard as most cities are pushing "sweeps" and getting the unhoused out of sight from the tourists and business areas, it 100% makes sense these people would end up in the sewers, along with all the other stuff that inconveniences or disturbs the well-to-do.

"These things have in common a certain incuriosity that I have found endemic among a certain kind of tech enthusiast, particularly the ones who are most interested in startups and entrepreneurship. Perhaps they have been so siloed that they did not realize their “discovery” was well -known elsewhere, or perhaps their self-conception is that they are the smartest, and if they don’t know something, no one knows it." https://www.theverge.com/tldr/915176/nft-metaverse-ai-weirdos
