As Atari signs a deal to turn 10 of its classic games into movies, here’s a repost of my column about the retro games we really want to see on the big screen: https://www.stuff.tv/features/another-mario-movie-put-these-retro-games-on-the-big-screen-instead/

Column! This is what worries me about Apple’s incoming revamped rent-an-iPhone deal – and what it could get right https://www.stuff.tv/features/this-is-what-worries-me-about-apples-incoming-revamped-rent-an-iphone-deal-and-what-it-could-get-right/ ^ Digging into the known quantity of the UK replacement and the rumours of what might happen in the US.

Good grief, the UX for the new financing on Apple’s UK site is a shitshow. It turns out that 0% *is* available for Macs, but the option only finally appears when you are several pages deep into checkout. That seems like… not a good thing. People will see the default and assume 0% isn’t available.

Doesn’t say amazing things for the Mac App Store that I find it faster to search for something in a search engine than within the MAS itself. And that’s when I already know the name of what I’m looking for.

Always lovely when devs take note of accessibility concerns. When I was writing about @quicheindustries Browser for Stuff recently, I found a vestibular trigger. Mentioned it to the dev. Now it’s not only been fixed, but users can opt to use the simpler tabs crossfade without having Reduce Motion on. (If you do have Reduce Motion on, the crossfade animation is enforced.)

Any recommendations for a USB CD drive for Mac that isn’t insanely noisy? I’d like something I can use for CD playback that isn’t really distracting. (I know units are always going to be pretty noisy when ripping.)

At least there’s some good news today, in that David Attenborough made it to his century. The Gruan wrote a piece with 100 highlights from his looooong career: https://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/ng-interactive/2026/may/08/david-attenborough-100-most-spectacular-screen-moments

By me: The ZX Spectrum and C64 have been reimagined as Nintendo DS-style retro gaming handhelds – and they look amazing https://www.stuff.tv/news/the-zx-spectrum-and-c64-have-been-reimagined-as-nintendo-ds-style-retro-gaming-handhelds-and-they-look-amazing/ (Well, the Speccy one looks amazing. The C64 one is very beige. But it still looks pretty cool.)

If this really is the back of the iPhone Ultra (or whatever it ends up being called), it’s interesting that Apple hasn’t taken the bump (sorry, _plateau_) further across. This looks like it’ll wobble on a table.

Apple being consistent here, since this was “downloaded from the internet”. But still funny, given that an Apple OS is warning me about downloading an Apple app from Apple’s own website.

Our garden is also somewhere birds tend to fly over rather than than hang around in. But we managed to get a small number of regulars that use it like the Leigh Delamere services. (Also, once you lose goldfinches, they’re not coming back for ages – possibly ever.)

I wrote about smartphone bans in schools for Stuff: https://www.stuff.tv/features/heres-why-a-school-smartphone-ban-is-a-very-bad-idea/ (I also had a comically short spot on BBC News due to this. Curious that Microsoft will refund an Xbox Cloud Gaming subscription if you ask for it fairly quickly (definitely within the day). Handy, also, when you just need to quickly check something out and take a few screen grabs. :D

I’ve seen a few takes of late that Liquid Glass is actually Pretty Good Now™, or that upgrade laggards are scared that Apple will merge its operating systems. Most of my devices remain on pre-26 systems because of Liquid Glass. In part, that’s about usability. But mostly, it’s still about accessibility. At best, Liquid Glass is poor, even with accessibility controls turned on. There are so many holes, and it’s clear Apple won’t deal with them, since we’re now on the road to the 27 systems.

RE: https://mastodon.social/@tuomas_h/116397694769738857 100% agree. I *need* accessibility on for my general work, due to motion sensitivity issues. But Reduce Transparency (and, to a lesser extent, Reduce Motion) is now so flawed that my main work Mac is still on Sequoia. I don’t recall ever having had a main Mac lag so much. But also in those grabs, those absurd drop shadows that make the buttons the most visually prominent thing on the screen, along with the insanely massive window corners...
