Look at older protocols like IRC, or at decentralized social media, and you'll notice something they have in common: neither one is popular. They get dismissed as obsolete, but not because they're inconvenient or broken. They work fine. The real problem is that they aren't profitable. There's no way for a corporation to sit in the middle of them and extract value from the people using them.
