We just fixed the _worst_ bug to ever exist in the #kicad symbol libraries. Clearly a 5/7 CVSS: One line in `C_Small` was 13mil instead of 12mil

Inspired by the magnet-pcb-clamps made by @concretedog@mastodon.social I "created" those PCB standoffs that only use standard parts. The main reason for a redesign is that I work a lot with hotair, which is not compatible with the 3D-Printed version. They are also lower, making it easier to do rework with a soldering iron without raising ones hand to much. Materials used * 1x M3x12 DIN-ISO 7380-2 * 2x M3 DIN 467 * 1x Round Magnet 3x10 * Blue loctite

A few people have asked about the "resist(or) pride flag" we had at HHA on #EMFCamp I ordered them on aliexpress. The design is CC-BY-SA 4.0. I made it based on a .jpeg I saw somewhere else - it is not my original idea! (Link to the file will appear here once I am home again).

I have ordered a new batch of #ReworkCTF pico boards for future workshops. Possibly at #EMFCamp And as always, JLCPCB fixed one of the intentional mistakes. They did remove the solder mask on both pads of R20. In the design, one of the pads is masked, the challenge is to gently scrape it free and then solder a component down. The frustrating part is that its exactly the same error as last time. And they just don't understand it.

People of a certain age will have used this thing. Same for me, but I never opened/inspected one until today. Do you know what this is? As usual, hide your #NameThatWare guess or deduction behind a CW. Because this is a rather common item per se, the correct solution needs mention what is special about this specimen and where it is commonly used. Do you also know why it was improved compared to the precious design variant?

I want to build a fast TDC (TimeToDigital) converter with the #RP2350 using the PIOs. Turns out this is reasonably simple by doing wait 1 pin 2 mov y timeout_value waitloop: jmp pin hitreceived jmp y-- waitloop ... The downside is that it takes two clock cycles for each count in the y register. But I want a really fast TDC (2ns resolution with a 500MHz clock). Anyone got an idea how to do faster count + capture on this chip?

Is there a color-scheme in #FreeCAD that makes it simpler to see which lines in a sketch are selected? The difference between green and slightly different green is basically invisible. Asking for future workshops.

This weeks #FreeCADFriday job is a little meta: making a handout for a upcoming #FreeCAD workshop in out hackerspace. This is heavily inspired from the #KiCad workshops I have been doing in the past, copying the basic concept.

This is what 20 years of coolant do to M12 connectors. Together with a coworker I exchanged 6 of them today with new cables and connectors. It only took about the whole day, because it was nearly impossible to access the whole cable run. Lots of zip ties were cut by only feeling their location. A endoscope camera would have been handy. #DeckelMaho #DMU80T #repair #machining

Today #CERN released its #KiCad component library to the public. They are licensed CERN-OHL-P-2.0 Thank you OSPO ❤️ for getting this done. Originally the library is made in Altium and will also be maintained in Altium. The repo only contains files that have been automatically converted. It is a database library which contains only fully specified parts. There are lots of weird connectors. Have fun exploring. https://home.cern/computing/cerns-kicad-component-library-now-open-source/

Damjan just merged one of my most awaited features in #KiCad There is now a UI to make simple 3D bodies for parts that don't have a 3D-Model yet. It can work on the Body outline or the courtyard, supports multiple materials/rendering styles and automatically add THT pins. https://gitlab.com/kicad/code/kicad/-/merge_requests/2542 This will not show up in KiCad10 because it changes the file format. In about a year with KiCad11 it will be available in a stable release.

Have you ever seen DIP switches that look like push buttons? I pulled those from old equipment, they were mounted in sockets.

I recently learned about Kyocera Q-Bridge parts. Those are infinity-ohm-resistors, but conduct heat reasonably well. Similar parts are also available from other Manufacturers. We don't have them in #KiCad yet, as a first step I want to add a symbol. The hard part is, that this is new, so IEC60617 is no help at all. And I could not find examples in the datasheet. And its not clear which reference-designator to use.

Are there uses for those PA7024P chips in #retrocomputing or #repair? I pulled them from (most likely) working equipment. And don't know what to do with them. Trash?

#FediKleinAnzeigen I got a box of used PMTs. They were removed from a decommissioned detector. I do not have matching bases. If you want to build something with one or more of them, give me a ping. I want to give them away for free[1] to people that make cool stuff. Since I will be at #GPN and #EMFCamp we can do handover on those events. Or you come to #CCCAC to pick them up. [1] If you can afford it and want to give some money, please donate that to our hackerspace.

For this #FreeCADFriday I can show this simple 'MTP tool' designed to help with removal and insertion of MTP fibre connectors in a constrained environment. The straight-fork end is for removal, it fits snug around the movable push-pull part of the connector. The semi-circle part is for pushing on the back of the connector, snapping it into the socket for installation.

Does someone have a #WLED board that include as a 12/24V -> 5V buck converter for WS2812 type LED-Strips? Ideally also with a power-switch that cuts the LEDs power when they are not lit. I am explicit asking for a integrated board that has already been designed. I don't want to put some DCDC module next to a normal WLED/ESP32 board. Nor do I want to design my own right now.

We finally can have KiCad10. Its long overdue, but there were so many annoying issues that have been fixed in the last weeks, it was just not ready[1]. The tags for the release of 10.0.0 have been set on the #kicad repository. Now we just need for the builds to complete. The release blogpost will soon be available as well. https://gitlab.com/kicad/code/kicad/-/tags/10.0.0 [1] I am sure there are plenty of issues/bugs left, but that's what the 10.0.1 release is for.

Our hackerspace @cccac will open its doors for all hackers that seek asylum from Karneval on Rosenmontag. The goal is to have a cozy and chill hacking experience together, ignoring all the Helau and Alaaf. https://ccc.ac/post/2026-02-16-silent-karneval
