The NYT has a great investigation on DOGE, which sold itself as an effort to fulfill the old dream of cutting government and instead delivered tiny savings and a whole lot of suffering and the elimination of essential spending. In a better world the people responsible would be heading to jail. Yesterday, as part of the Palmer LTER cruise, we recovered one of our moorings, deployed in 525 m of water. When it popped up, we saw the top of two 37” steel floats badly dented. It had been at around 60 m below the surface.
