“Taste is built the slow, stupid, humiliating way: you make something bad, you are forced to live with it, it fails in front of you, and some part of you files the failure away. Then you do it again.” https://notashelf.dev/posts/taste-is-all-thats-left

Every time someone asks for feedback I do a calibration. What level do they want? L0: praise. “You did great!” L1: small. “That font could be larger” L2: medium. “Your story would be stronger if you ran these other simulations.” L3: large. “Your need for external validation is preventing you from being decisive.” L4: existential. “Your field is steadily becoming irrelevant. There is no ethical consumption under capitalism. We’re decaying into fascism. None of this matters.” #ActuallyAutistic

I’m hopeful that the VC bubble for humanoid robotics died on the vine. That physical robots, a source of happiness for me, have been declared a poor investment and spared the humiliation that has been inflicted on machine learning.

I shut down my online courses at End-to-End Machine Learning 18 months ago. Wrote a blog post and everything. But the platform I was using hasn't bothered to take them down. So they're just sitting there, all for free. Prego. https://end-to-end-machine-learning.teachable.com

A tricky thing about work is that things that feel useful and things that are useful are different things. They overlap, but not as much as you think.

No one captures the dissonance quite like Melissa and Johnathan Nightingale. Their latest has been ricocheting around my brain for days. Strong recommend, especially if you're leading a team while navigating this. https://mailchi.mp/rawsignal/the-people-who-care-are-having-the-hardest-time?e=78d81a5fcd

in fantasy stories I've seen a recurring theme of naming things. A true name of a thing has great power and is inconveniently long. Ents in Lord of the Rings. Wolves in Wheel of Time. Sorcery in A Wizard of Earthsea. This is how I like to name my Python variables.

RE: https://dair-community.social/@timnitGebru/116477949716199030 Most of us have the “it can’t happen to me” blind spot. Human brains seem weirdly susceptible to delusion. And stubbornly reluctant to admit it.
